Romero To The Rescue! Spurs Captain's 95th-Minute Bicycle Kick Rescue Spurs | WATCH

Cristian Romero turned chaos into catharsis for Spurs on Tuesday night, producing a last-gasp overhead kick to snatch a dramatic 2-2 draw against Newcastle at St James' Park.

For Tottenham — and especially under-pressure manager Thomas Frank — the point felt like an escape hatch after three straight defeats.

Newcastle, meanwhile, will be kicking themselves. Eddie Howe's side had the visitors exactly where they wanted them — twice — only to watch Romero drag Spurs level on both occasions with the composure of a seasoned striker rather than a centre-back.

Newcastle Dominance, Missed Chances

For long stretches, Newcastle looked the sharper, more aggressive team. They dictated the tempo early, pressing Spurs back and creating the first real flashpoint when Joelinton's driven effort skimmed across the goal and rattled off the far post in the 35th minute.

Spurs did carve out a moment of their own before halftime — Lucas Bergvall nearly produced a highlight-reel goal with an audacious backheel that dipped just over Aaron Ramsdale's bar.

The second half brought even more drama. Guglielmo Vicario denied Harvey Barnes before Kevin Danso cleared Nick Woltemade's follow-up header off the line in a frantic sequence. Newcastle were threatening; the breakthrough felt inevitable.

Goals, VAR, and Late Chaos

Howe rolled the dice with a pair of attacking subs, introducing Anthony Gordon and Anthony Elanga. The change paid off almost immediately: Gordon surged down the left, the ball broke kindly, and Bruno Guimaraes guided a composed finish into the far corner on 71 minutes.

But Spurs hit back quickly. Seven minutes later, Romero powered home a Mohammed Kudus cross to level the match.

Newcastle restored their lead from the penalty spot after a VAR check showed Rodrigo Bentancur tangling with Dan Burn. Gordon smashed the spot-kick home, seemingly sealing three points.

Then came Romero — again.

Deep into the 95th minute, he connected with a loose ball from a corner, an improvised overhead attempt that deflected off his shin and trickled past Ramsdale.

Scruffy? Absolutely. Crucial? Even more so.

Relief for Frank, Frustration for Howe

Frank praised his team's resilience: “It showed fantastic mentality and character… The ability to react to setbacks was great."

Howe, understandably, felt the opposite. “It's a disappointing feeling having worked so hard," he said. “We were in the ascendancy."

The result leaves Spurs 11th—just above Newcastle—but, more importantly, gives Frank some breathing room.
