PCOS-Friendly Holi Eating: Smart, Balanced Tips To Celebrate Without The Crash
Holi is synonymous with colour, chaos and comfort food – plates piled with gujiya, malpua, thandai and fried snacks passed around all afternoon. But for women managing PCOS, festive eating can feel like a minefield. Sugar spikes, bloating, fatigue and sudden crashes often follow what should be a carefree celebration.
The key, experts say, isn’t restriction. It’s rhythm. “Holi is a festival of colours, chaos, and indulgence- but if you have PCOS, navigating festive food can feel tricky. The good news? You don’t need to skip celebrations or eat ‘perfectly.’ A few mindful choices can help you enjoy Holi without triggering bloating, fatigue, or blood sugar crashes," says Dr Archana Batra, dietitian and certified diabetes educator.
Echoing the sentiment, Eshanka Wahi, culinary nutritionist and founder of Eat Clean With Eshanka, adds, “During festivals, women with PCOS commonly skip meals to ‘save calories’ for desserts later. But this usually backfires."
Skipping breakfast might seem strategic, but it almost always leads to overeating sweets later. Dr Batra recommends beginning the day with protein to stabilise blood sugar and tame cravings. “Start your day with a protein-rich breakfast such as eggs, paneer, Greek yoghurt, or dal chilla. Protein stabilises blood sugar and reduces sugar cravings throughout the day."
Wahi suggests combining protein with fibre and healthy fats for sustained fullness. Think besan or moong dal cheela with paneer, yoghurt with nuts, or a veggie omelette.
Holi desserts are rich in refined flour and sugar – a combination that can spike insulin levels, something women with PCOS are particularly sensitive to. Instead of sampling everything, Dr Batra advises moderation. She says, “Instead of multiple servings, pick one favourite sweet, eat it slowly, and pair it with nuts or curd to slow sugar absorption."
Wahi agrees: “Choose just one or two of your favourites rather than trying them all… Enjoy your sweets slowly and mindfully." She also recommends desserts made with dates, jaggery or almond flour when possible.
Digestive health plays a big role in hormone balance. “Curd-based snacks like dahi chaat, fruit raita, or homemade thandai (with minimal sugar) help keep digestion calm and prevent heat-related fatigue. A healthy gut supports hormone balance, which is crucial in PCOS management," says Dr Batra.
These probiotic-rich foods can counteract the heaviness of fried snacks while keeping energy levels steady.
Liquid calories add up quickly. “Sugary drinks, packaged thandai, and sweetened lassi can quietly overload you with sugar," Dr Batra notes, recommending buttermilk or coconut water instead.
Wahi suggests homemade, low-sugar thandai, coconut water, or anti-inflammatory teas such as chamomile, ginger or turmeric tea to stay hydrated and reduce inflammation.
If you indulge in fried food, offset it with fibre – salads, sprouts or fruit – to slow glucose release. Gentle activity like walking, dancing or stretching can further improve insulin sensitivity and digestion.
PCOS-friendly eating during Holi isn’t about saying no to every treat. It’s about steady energy, fewer crashes and mindful enjoyment. Prioritise protein, choose sweets wisely, hydrate well and keep moving. With a little planning, you can celebrate Holi fully without compromising your health.
