More women in Indian cities are being diagnosed with PCOS and thyroid problems than before. Doctors say these conditions are no longer rare. They are now common health issues affecting young and working women.
These disorders do not just affect periods or weight. They can also impact mood, energy levels, fertility and overall health. Many women are only finding out about these problems after facing symptoms for months or even years.
City Lifestyle Is Affecting Hormone Health
One of the main reasons behind the rise is modern urban life. Long working hours, daily stress, less sleep and little physical activity are now common. All these factors can disturb the body’s hormone balance.
Food habits also play a big role. Many city residents depend on packaged snacks, fast food and sugary drinks. Eating too many refined carbs and unhealthy fats can lead to weight gain and insulin resistance, which is strongly linked to PCOS. When blood sugar
levels go up often, it puts pressure on the body and worsens hormone problems.
Stress is another major factor. When a person is stressed for a long time, the body produces more cortisol, known as the stress hormone. High cortisol levels can disturb reproductive hormones and slow down metabolism. Poor sleep, late nights and shift work
further disturb the body clock, making hormone balance even harder to maintain.
Thyroid Issues Are Rising Silently
Thyroid disorders, especially hypothyroidism, are also increasing among women. India already has a high number of thyroid cases. Some studies reportedly suggest that nearly 1 in 8 young women may be affected.
Thyroid problems often start slowly. Symptoms like tiredness, weight gain, hair fall and mood swings are easy to ignore. Many women think these signs are due to stress or a busy routine and do not get tested early.
There is also a connection between PCOS and thyroid disorders. Research shows that thyroid problems may be more common in women who already have PCOS. This means the two conditions can sometimes occur together, making health management more difficult.

Women living in cities face certain risks more than those in rural areas. These include:
