Does Taking Pills Really Help PCOS? A Noida Woman Shares Her Journey

Painful periods, facial hair and difficulty losing weight have become common concerns among many women today, especially those young. Doctors, fitness enthusiasts and those experiencing these symptoms are increasingly speaking about them on social media and other platforms. However, beneath these conversations lies a serious and growing public health issue: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).

PCOS is a chronic endocrine disorder that impacts multiple aspects of health, including reproductive, metabolic and psychological well-being. Lifestyle changes, dietary adjustments and regular exercise are considered the first line of treatment and offer the most effective long-term results. In some cases, medical intervention may also be required. Among the commonly prescribed treatments are hormonal pills, such as contraceptives, aimed at managing symptoms and regulating menstrual cycles. But how effective are they in the long run?

25 Year-Old Woman Shares Her Personal PCOS Journey

Divya Sharma, a 25-year-old working professional from Noida, shared her personal PCOS journey, from discovering the condition to receiving what she calls an “absurd" recommendation from her doctor. When Divya sought treatment, she was prescribed medication along with strict lifestyle advice, being told to “take life seriously," quit smoking and drinking, stop partying, sleep on time, and replace dinner with a so-called ‘PCOS protein drink.

Divya shared, “In my early 20s, I had a sudden episode of severe back pain and stomach ache. The pain was unbearable. So much so that I was rushed straight to Emergency. After what felt like endless blood tests, two ultrasounds, and multiple consultations, doctors finally concluded that it was a UTI. But during one of those ultrasounds, the doctor casually added another diagnosis," as per a report by NDTV.

“Oh, you also have PCOS," Divya's doctor told her.

What stayed with her even more than the physical discomfort was the advice that followed.

“Are you married? You should get married early and think of having kids sooner, or else it will be a problem for you," the doctor said, as she laid on the hospital bed, stunned.

Divya said she was 23. The idea of marriage, let alone children, felt absurd to her at that point in her life. “At that moment, it felt like someone had already mapped out my future based on an ultrasound report," she said.

She added, “That was my first introduction to Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, or PCOS. And over time, I realised how common that story is among Indian women."

Pills For PCOS and Their Side Effects

Combined Oral Contraceptives, or COCs, are the most common pills prescribed to regulate periods. But these medications come with warnings about lifestyle choices and a lot of side effects like breakthrough bleeding, headaches, nausea, breast tenderness, bloating, mood changes, weight gain and reduced libido.

While Divya diligently followed every piece of advice she was given, two years later a medically required scan revealed a very different reality, once again.

“The doctor performing the scan looked at my reports and said, “Who told you that you have PCOS? You don't.""

Divya shared “I was confused. I still had symptoms. Fatigue. Excessive hair fall. Facial hair growth. Stubborn belly fat. But there was more. What I didn't realise back then was how complicated PCOS really is. My gynaecologist later clarified that “cysts just don't define PCOS, if you have the symptoms you've PCOS."

Divya was then prescribed pills without being warned about their potential side effects.

PCOS Impacts Women Globally, Yet Remains Largely Ignored

PCOS is a condition many women live with, often without even knowing it. Globally, it affects an estimated 5–10 per cent of women, with some studies placing the number between 4 and 20 per cent nearly one in eight women. In India, the prevalence is even higher, with nearly one in four women affected. Alarmingly, up to 70 per cent of cases remain undiagnosed.

PCOS is not a one-size-fits-all disorder. Every woman experiences it differently, with symptoms and severity varying widely from person to person.

Women in India and around the world are increasingly realising that there is no single pill that can cure PCOS. As research on women's health continues to evolve, many are turning to natural remedies, often shared through word of mouth and widely discussed on social media.

According to Mitesh Desai, Founder of Purezen Health Solutions Private Limited, PCOS affects far more than just periods.

“At its core, PCOS disrupts how the ovaries respond to hormones such as insulin, estrogen, progesterone and androgens. Women experience irregular cycles, erratic ovulation, mood swings, and common symptoms like acne, excess facial hair, or hair thinning when this system is out of balance," he said.

“While allopathic therapies can alleviate symptoms, many women nowadays seek to address the underlying causes of their problems. Concerns around side effects and dependency on medication are pushing them toward gentler options like nutrition, exercise and nutraceuticals," Desai explained.

The Role Of Natural Medicine

Dr Mazherunnisa Begum, BUMS MD from Hamdard Wellness, explains why many women move away from allopathy.

“Many women avoid allopathy because of its side effects, such as skin allergies, weight gain, stomach upset, disturbed bowel movements, nausea, and dizziness," she said

She added that natural remedies using herbs like ashwagandha, fenugreek and ginger, along with lifestyle changes such as eating early, getting enough sleep, consuming fresh food and regular walking, contributes to providing long-term relief.

This shift towards natural approaches isn't about rejecting medicine, but about regaining control, understanding the body better and choosing methods that work with it rather than suppressing its signals.
