Aviation ministry directs IndiGo to cut 10% of flights
The Union government on Tuesday ordered IndiGo to cut its scheduled flights by 10% to stabilise the airline's operations.
This means 400 to 500 IndiGo flights will be cancelled, The Hindu quoted an unidentified executive of the airline as saying.
The curtailed operations will also lead to reduced cancellations of IndiGo flights, the Ministry of Civil Aviation said.
The airline has been instructed to comply with all the directives of the ministry, including the capping of fares and measures to ensure convenience of passengers “without any exception”, the government said.
The ministry's decision doubled the 5% curtailment of operations that the Directorate General of Civil Aviation had ordered on Tuesday. The regulator had asked the airline to make the cuts “especially on high-demand, high-frequency” routes and to avoid single-flight operations on any sector.
Air travel has been severely hit since December 2 when a shortage of pilots and crew forced IndiGo to cancel and delay hundreds of flights. The disruption also led to fares on several routes rising to unprecedented levels.
On Monday, responding to a show-cause notice from the regulator, IndiGo said it was “profusely apologetic” for the disruptions.
On Tuesday, the airline cancelled more than 400 flights.
The disruptions came amid the rollout of stricter work hour norms introduced in November. The revised rostering norms, issued by the regulator in January 2024 after concerns about pilot fatigue, were meant to take effect on June 1.
However, airlines asked for delayed implementation because of staffing shortages and operational challenges, and the key changes were eventually introduced on November 1.
The new rules required longer weekly rest, restricted night landings, extended the definition of night hours and limited consecutive night duties.
IndiGo used to operate about 2,300 flights daily and holds about 60% of India's domestic civil aviation market, making it the country's largest airline.
On Tuesday, the government said that it had summoned IndiGo's Chief Executive Officer Pieter Elbers to seek an update about the situation.
The ministry quoted Elbers as having said that 100% of the refunds for flights affected till December 6 had been completed. “A strict instruction to expedite the completion of the remaining refunds and baggage handover was given.” the ministry added.
It added that an enquiry into the disruption was underway.
