High up in the Italian Alps, far from busy roads and cities, there's a place so remote that the world below feels like a distant memory. It is surrounded by snow-capped peaks, thick tropical rainforest, and breathtaking scenery, which sits at a height of 15,000 feet above sea level.
The hotel is quite remote, situated on an Italian mountain. It promises a unique experience. However, getting there is no easy task, and the journey itself is an experience. This is only reachable on foot. Visitors must trek for nearly five hours across rugged mountain trails.
Not A Movie Scene But…
This is not a scene from a movie; it's the reality of the Margherita Hut, one of the most isolated hotels on the planet. It is located on Italian territory near the border with Switzerland. The hut is named after Queen Margherita of Savoy and was built in 1893.
From here, you can see mountains ranging from the Swiss Alps to the Maritime Alps, many of which are over 4,000 meters high. The views are breathtaking. You may witness sunrise and sunset from one of the most picturesque locations in the Alps if you stay the night.
According to reports, civil marriage ceremonies have been permitted at the Margherita Hut since the summer of 2017. However, couples cannot take a helicopter to reach the hut. They still need to do the long hike across glaciers and mountain trail.
Several neighboring peaks, such as Punta Zumstein, Punta Parrot, Ludwigshoe, Swarzhorn, Balmenhorn, and Punta Vincent, can be climbed during this journey. Usually, the trip to the hut takes two days. The Gnifetti Hut, Monte Rosa Hut, or Resegotti Hut are examples of lower-altitude huts where climbers typically stay one night before moving on to Margherita the following morning.
Route To Margherita Hut
The typical route begins at the town of Alagna Valsesia, which is well-known because Giovanni Gnifetti, the parish priest of the town, organised by the first successful ascent to the neighboring mountain in 1842. Walking on large glaciers is a thrilling experience while staying at this hotel.
Near the peak, at a slope of roughly 35 degrees, lies the steepest part. Additionally, you could come across steeper slopes composed of snow and ice that can reach 45 degrees.
When Is It Open and Cost Of Stay
The Margherita Hut is open during the summer of 2026 from 20th June to 5th September. In the winter, when the hut is officially closed, there is a small winter room available, which is unmanaged, and no reservation is needed to provide recuperation and accommodation. In summers, it has 70 beds and in winters, there is an unmanaged winter facility with 12 beds.
For summer 2026, staying at the Margherita Hut will cost €150 (Rs 16,374) per person for Half Board, €130 (Rs 14,191) for Half Board if you are an IFMGA Alpine Guide, and €130 (Rs 14,191) for Bed & Breakfast. The Half Board option includes a full dinner, an overnight stay, a sweet and salty breakfast buffet, tea, tourist tax, and free Wi-Fi. The Bed & Breakfast option includes an overnight stay, breakfast buffet, tea, tourist tax, and free Wi-Fi.
