The Maid Earning Rs 45,000 & The One Who Can't Afford Groceries — Inside Noida's Domestic Help Divide
As app-based domestic services expand and discussions around wages in the informal sector grow louder, the sharp divide between traditional domestic workers and those employed through online platforms is becoming increasingly visible. For many women working in neighbourhood homes, low and irregular pay, rising living costs and limited access to digital opportunities continue to define daily life.
One such domestic helper in Noida, who has spent the past six to seven years working across multiple households, says survival itself remains a struggle. Unlike salaried workers, she has no fixed monthly income as earnings vary from house to house, with some paying Rs 1,500 a month, others Rs 2,000 or Rs 2,500, and a few up to Rs 3,000. By working in three to four homes each day, she manages to earn only Rs 12,000 to Rs 15,000 a month.
That income, she says, has to cover food, rent, children’s education, healthcare and emergencies, often leaving little room to breathe. With her children in government schools and loans frequently needed during illness, she describes a life shaped by constant financial pressure – a reality shared by many domestic workers in India’s informal economy.
For many offline domestic workers, the challenge is not only low wages but also exclusion from the rapidly growing digital economy. Limited literacy and lack of familiarity with smartphones have left many unable to access online platforms that now connect domestic workers with clients.
“We’re not educated, and we don’t know how to use mobile phones properly, so we can’t connect with online platforms to get domestic helper jobs," she explains. That gap, she suggests, has created two very different worlds within the same profession; one struggling to survive, and another increasingly benefiting from technology.
According to her, women working through online domestic service platforms are earning significantly more than traditional neighbourhood-based workers. “If someone works online, they get Rs 100 to Rs 200 per hour," she says. “And they’re paid for every hour they stay."
That hourly model, she notes, changes everything. While offline workers like her bring home only Rs 12,000 to Rs 15,000 a month despite working across multiple households, those associated with online platforms can reportedly earn Rs 40,000 to Rs 45,000 a month.
The difference, she says, is impossible to ignore. “If you compare monthly earnings, we make only Rs 12,000 to Rs 15,000. But maids working through online platforms can earn much more." For many traditional workers, the contrast has become a source of frustration, particularly because their own wages have remained stagnant.
She points out that even when domestic labour became scarce, wages for offline helpers did not rise meaningfully. Factors such as wheat harvesting season, gas shortages and elections in West Bengal led many workers to return to their native places, creating a shortage of domestic help in cities.
Yet, despite that reduced supply, there was little improvement in what traditional domestic workers were paid. “Even after that, there has been no increase in the salary of offline domestic helpers," she says. Meanwhile, women working through online platforms, she adds, are doing particularly well.
There is, however, another side to the debate. Some employers argue that despite higher earnings for online domestic workers, hiring through platforms can sometimes be costlier for households.
Tanu, a resident of Noida, says the maid who has been working at her home for years is paid Rs 4,000 a month. In contrast, she says hiring someone through an online platform often means paying Rs 100 to Rs 200 per hour. “The biggest thing," she says, “is that they only do the work they have agreed to do. And if they are even a little delayed or stay longer, they charge extra for that too."
From her perspective, the traditional arrangement offers greater flexibility and long-term affordability, while app-based domestic help operates more like a formalised service with clearly defined tasks and time-bound charges.
The contrast reveals a growing divide in domestic work: between traditional, informal labour that remains underpaid and insecure, and a newer app-driven workforce commanding higher rates through structured services.
For women still working offline, the issue is not simply that others are earning more. It is that technology, education and access have become deciding factors in who benefits from the changing economy. While one group continues to juggle multiple homes to survive on modest wages, another is increasingly finding better pay, stronger bargaining power and more control over working hours.
And for many women left outside the digital shift, the aspiration is simple; not extraordinary earnings, but fairer wages and a little more stability in lives built on relentless labour.
