How a simple question posted on Reddit has snowballed into a full-blown internet debate, is a Rs 90 lakh annual salary enough to live comfortably in Bengaluru? The debate began when an Indian-origin professional based in the United States took to Reddit shared his plans to return to India after more than a decade abroad.
The man, who holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering and has over 12 years of experience in a highly specialised field, currently earns around $190,000 a year in the US, close to Rs 1.6 crore, excluding stock benefits due to vest in 2026. The NRI user wrote, “This is a major sticking point for me because I planned to pay off our villa in India when the stocks vest. We are planning to relocate to India to care for our parents".
Despite the high pay, family has become the deciding factor. The NRI said in his social media post that he wants to move back to Bengaluru to be closer to his ageing parents. However, a job offer from a multinational company in the city has left him torn. The company has proposed a total package of Rs 90 lakh per annum, with a base salary of Rs 74 lakh, a significant drop from his current earnings.
Posting under the question on Reddit, titled “Is 90 LPA a good salary in BLR for a returnee?", the user asked fellow Redditors whether the offer would be enough to manage household expenses, raise a child, handle schooling costs and still enjoy a good quality of life in Bengaluru. He also admitted that the pay cut was troubling, especially since he had hoped to pay off his villa in India using the proceeds from his US stock units.
Many users commented that the offer was more than adequate in an Indian context, “don't overthink it, this is a good move. You can always come back since you have US passport this isn't a luxury everyone has," one user wrote. Several pointed out that Rs 90 lakh places someone firmly in the top income bracket in India and allows for a comfortable lifestyle, even in a city like Bengaluru.
Not all netzines agree, arguing that the package undervalued his academic credentials and long experience. One user comments, “Sorry to break it you! 90 LPA CTC is peanuts in BLR. it is going to be hand-to-mouth living for you! negotiate and say you can water the boss's garden to get a better offer!"
They noted that senior professionals, especially in Bengaluru's tech and research ecosystem, often command salaries well above Rs 1.5 crore. Some urged him not to settle and to negotiate harder, suggesting that accepting such an offer could set him back financially in the long run.
Adding another layer to the decision, the NRI revealed that he is in the process of securing US citizenship and plans to apply for an Overseas Citizen of India card before relocating. While he is confident about career opportunities in India, he worries about whether returning now could limit his financial growth compared to staying abroad longer.
