Suspended Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir on Monday said he would not resign from the West Bengal Assembly, backtracking on his earlier announcement, PTI reported.

This came two days after the legislator, who represents the Bharatpur seat in Murshidabad, laid the foundation stone of a Babri Masjid-style mosque in Murshidabad district.

On December 4, the Trinamool Congress suspended Kabir, saying that his remarks about building a Babri Masjid-like mosque were aimed at fuelling communal tensions.

The same day, Kabir had announced that he would resign from the party and float a new outfit on December 22.

The Babri Masjid in Ayodhya was demolished on December 6, 1992, by Hindu extremists because they believed that it stood on the spot on which the deity Ram had been born. On January 22, 2024, the Ram temple was inaugurated at the site in a ceremony led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

On Monday, Kabir said that the people of his constituency had asked him not to quit.

“There is no question of my resignation now,” PTI quoted him as saying. “I am not stepping down as MLA.”

He added: “I got massive support from people after the foundation stone was laid. That support has strengthened my resolve”

Even as he chooses to remain in the Assembly, Kabir reiterated that he would proceed with plans to launch a new political outfit later this month, PTI reported. He also claimed that two more MLAs would join his proposed party, PTI reported.

Assembly elections in West Bengal are expected to be held between March and April 2026.
