Snap Inc, the parent firm of Snapchat, is reportedly gearing up to announce a fresh round of layoffs, with cuts likely to impact 15-20 per cent of its workforce.
According to a report by Alex Heath in his Sources newsletter, citing people familiar with the matter, the company could reduce its headcount by around 15-20%. Snap currently employs over 5,000 people, and in some teams, reductions could be as steep as half. However, the final number of affected employees remains uncertain.
There is also ambiguity around how strongly CEO Evan Spiegel will frame the layoffs as being linked to artificial intelligence-led restructuring.
Even as layoffs loom, Snap is simultaneously expanding hiring within its Specs division, which was recently spun off as a separate entity. The hiring push includes teams working on Lens Studio, a platform used by developers to build augmented reality experiences for Snapchat and Specs.
Snap had introduced Specs earlier this year as an independent business focused on AR smart glasses, positioning itself to compete with Meta Platforms in the wearables space. The company has invested more than $3 billion over the past 11 years into AR glasses development, Spiegel said at the Augmented World Expo.
The developments come against the backdrop of improving traction in Snap’s non-advertising revenue streams. In February, the company said its direct-revenue business had reached a $1 billion annualised run rate, driven largely by its Snapchat+ subscription offering.
Snap also disclosed that its subscriber base has crossed 25 million. Its direct revenue portfolio includes Snapchat+, the Memories content storage feature, and in-app purchases, part of a broader effort to diversify beyond its core advertising business.
Last year, Spiegel had described Snap as being in a “crucible moment” following a slowdown in quarterly revenue growth, outlining plans to build direct revenue into “a durable multi-billion-dollar growth driver for Snap”.
Separately, a proposed integration between Snap and Perplexity AI has been shelved.
The deal would have seen Perplexity invest $400 million in cash and equity to integrate its AI-powered answer engine into Snapchat. Snap had positioned the partnership as a potential blueprint for future AI integrations on its platform.
However, the rollout was delayed due to disagreements over terms, the company said in its latest earnings call. The proposed investment would have accounted for roughly 7% of Snap’s projected 2025 revenue.
