A fresh round of negotiations between the United States and Iran could take place as early as Thursday, Associated Press reported, citing US officials.
The potential talks come after recent high-level discussions in Islamabad failed to produce a breakthrough but left the door open for continued dialogue. The peace talks in Islamabad, held over the weekend, were the first direct encounter between US and Iranian officials in more than a decade and the most high-level engagement since Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution. 21-Hour Marathon Meeting Ends Without A Deal
The US delegation included Vice President JD Vance, special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, while Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi represented Iran.
The marathon discussions, lasting for about 21 hours, ended without an agreement but kept channels open for further dialogue. The high-level talks, held four days after last Tuesday’s ceasefire announcement, were aimed at securing a broader peace framework amid escalating tensions linked to Iran’s nuclear programme, US sanctions, and regional security concerns, including the Strait of Hormuz.
Despite reports that both sides came close to a deal, deep divisions over key issues ultimately stalled progress. If held, the upcoming round of talks could prove crucial in determining whether diplomatic efforts can move forward or whether tensions between Washington and Tehran will continue to intensify.
Why US-Iran Peace Talks Collapsed?
During the high-stakes negotiations, the US proposed that Iran agree to a 20-year suspension of nuclear activity, arguing that long-term restrictions were essential to prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons capability well into the future. JD Vance said before leaving Pakistan that such a timeline would ensure Iran could not pursue a bomb “not just now, not just two years from now, but for the long term."
According to officials cited in a Wall Street Journal report, Washington’s proposal stopped short of a permanent ban, instead suggesting a prolonged moratorium on enrichment to balance non-proliferation concerns with Iran’s rights under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
Tehran, however, pushed back, offering a much shorter pause of up to five years or a “single digit" timeframe. A key sticking point was Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium. US negotiators demanded the removal of nearly 970 pounds of near weapons-grade material from the country, while Iran insisted it remain domestically, proposing instead a monitored process to dilute it to lower enrichment levels.
The sharp differences over enrichment limits and uranium stockpiles ultimately derailed efforts to reach an agreement, with Iranian lawmaker Seyyed Mahmoud Nabavian identifying these issues as central obstacles.
