Snapchat ‘Memory’ Feature Will Cost Users Soon: Here’s What It Means
Snapchat is still a popular app among Instagram and its Reels trending. In fact, Snapchat was the first app to bring some of the features that its rivals picked up later. And soon, we could see one of the Snapchat features breaking the free-gate. Snapchat Memories has helped millions store their old photos and videos for many years but soon people will be asked to pay if they want to save their content on the platform.
Snapchat is not the first platform to stop offering free storage, something WhatsApp has done earlier by asking people to store their data (files, chats and images) on a Google Drive account which becomes chargeable from day one after the free quota is over.
No More Free Memories, Time To Pay
Snapchat Memories has allowed users to save their stories and photos for many years since it was introduced in 2016. But the company is now changing the terms of using its storage facility and putting a free tier after which people will be required to pay a monthly fee to keep the space for all the content. Snap, the company owning Snapchat has shared the big update will be applicable globally.
The platform will allow people to have Memories content of around 5GB after which they will be asked to take extra storage on its server much akin to Google charging people for its Drive cloud storage.
According to a TechCrunch report, Snapchat will charge around $1.99 (Rs 173 approx) for a 100GB storage plan, and also have the option to take the Snapchat+ monthly plan for $3.99 (Rs 347 approx) which offers 250GB storage for your photos and videos.
Memories Cost Money
Snapchat stories go away after 24 hours but that's where Memories comes in to help you save the content. And the company claims millions have used this feature to save “trillions of data" and now all that space is going to come at a price. If your account already has over 5GB memories, Snapchat will soon alert you about upgrading or at least saving all the data.

However, it is not all doom and gloom, because, even if you have crossed the 5GB limit Snapchat will not immediately delete the content. These users will be given 12 months of temporary storage and the option to download the photos and videos.
Snapchat has gradually become the go-to platform for users (especially the youth) in India, and making its popular feature chargeable might not appeal to many. So, make sure you have less than 5GB of data saved and get ready to pay.
