Sanjay Dutt Reveals He Got Khalnayak Sequel Idea During His Jail Term: ‘When I Came Out On Parole…’
Sanjay Dutt’s fans were in for a treat as the Bollywood actor announced his new film, Khalnayak Returns, on Friday. The film offers a fresh take on the 1993 blockbuster ‘Khalnayak’ starring Dutt, Madhuri Dixit and Jackie Shroff in lead roles. Now, with the sequel announcement after 33 years, fans are thrilled! During the poster launch event in Mumbai, Sanjay Dutt told the media that the journey of Khalnayak wouldn’t have been possible without Subhash Ghai. He also revealed that the idea for the sequel originated during his jail term for the 1993 Mumbai blast case. He recalled asking fellow inmates if they would be interested in watching the sequel, and said around 4,000 of them responded positively.
“The journey of ‘Khalnayak’ has been long and without Subhash ji it wouldn’t have been possible. He is a legend and a man of entertainment. He will be part of this ‘Khalnayak’," said Sanjay Dutt. He further added that the idea of Khalnayak sequel began while he was in jail. “In jail, I asked everyone around me — who would be interested in watching it. And the 4,000 inmates said they all would. I asked all of them to write one page about it (new ‘Khalnayak’ story), and it took me a while to read all 4,000 pages."
“When I came out on parole, I asked Subhash sir to go through it. After that, he said it should be made," the actor said.
Meanwhile, Subhash Ghai said that it was Sanju and Manyata’s inner wish and passion to make Khalnayak Returns, and expressed confidence that it would be better than the original. He also said he is always there to help in any way needed.
Sanjay Dutt unveiled the first look of Khalnayak Returns on April 24, instantly sending fans into a frenzy, especially with the unmistakable echo of the cult track Khal Nayak Hoon Main playing in the background. Sharing the announcement, Dutt wrote, “Kuch kahaani khatam nahi hoti… woh dobara shuru hoti hai. Khalnayak Returns." While details around the cast and release timeline remain tightly guarded, the reveal alone has been enough to reignite memories of a film that continues to hold a firm place in pop culture.
Sanjay Dutt also unveiled two posters of his look from Khalnayak Returns. In one, he is seen smoking with an intense expression, while the second shows him smiling menacingly. “Har kahaani ka ek waqt hota hai…aur uska waqt aa gaya hai. ‘Khalnayak Returns’," read the caption.
The original Khalnayak, directed by Subhash Ghai, released in 1993 and emerged as one of the most iconic films of its era. Featuring Sanjay Dutt as Ballu, alongside Madhuri Dixit and Jackie Shroff, the film challenged the traditional hero-villain divide by presenting a layered, morally complex character. The film emerged as one of the highest-grossing releases of 1993.
