Ola Electric receives certification for rare-earth-free ferrite motor
Electric two-wheeler (e2w) maker Ola Electric has received government certification for a ferrite motor it has developed in-house that eliminates the use of rare-earth materials, reducing dependence on imported components in its supply chain.
The certification, granted by the Global Automotive Research Centre (GARC), Tamil Nadu, follows tests conducted per AIS 041 standards issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
According to the company, the tests showed that the ferrite motor's performance matched that of rare-earth permanent magnet motors in terms of net power for 7kW and 11 kW variants.
“By removing rare-earth dependence, we're derisking our supply chain, lowering costs, and strengthening India's long-term technology independence. This certification marks another step towards building deep engineering capability and ensuring that our EV future is designed, developed, and manufactured, in India,” Bhavish Aggarwal, founder of Ola Electric, wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Ferrite motors are made using ferrite magnets instead of rare-earth elements such as neodymium and dysprosium, which are predominantly imported from China.
Ola Electric said it plans to begin integrating the ferrite motor across its scooter lineup following the certification.
The development comes as the government pushes for deeper localisation of EV components through the production linked incentive (PLI) scheme and other initiatives. The EV industry had faced disruptions due to Chinese export restrictions on rare-earth metals, which affected several manufacturers.
While Beijing lifted the export curbs last month following diplomatic discussions, removing a major bottleneck for EV and electronics makers, companies have been exploring alternatives to reduce exposure to such supply risks.
Tarun Mehta, founder of Ather Energy, had recently said during the company's quarterly earnings call that it is exploring multiple options to cut dependence on Chinese imports, including a possible move towards ferrite motors.
Ola Electric, which slipped to the fourth position in the e2w market behind TVS Motor, Bajaj Auto, and Ather Energy in September, has claimed around Rs 400 crore under the government's PLI scheme for the automobile and auto component sector, as reported by ET.
The company has also received compliance certification for its Gen 3 scooter portfolio, making it eligible for incentives of 13-18% of the determined sales value until 2028.
