Two-Wheeler Theft Trail, 300 CCTV Videos: What Led To Arrest Of Coimbatore Gang-Rape Accused
Three people, arrested for their alleged involvement in the gang rape of a college student in Tamil Nadu's Coimbatore, were history sheeters and had criminal cases, including murder, theft and hurt, pending against them.
It was also known that on the night of November 2, the trio had robbed a two-wheeler and were travelling on a road near the Coimbatore airport, before gangraping the student and assaulting her friend.
The three accused were identified as Satish alias Karuppsamy, his brother Karthi alias Kalishewaran, both from Virudhunagar district, and their relative Guna alias Thavasi from Madurai district.
They were nabbed as they tried to attack the police team that went in search of them, City Police Commissioner A Saravana Sundar told reporters.
COIMBATORE GANG-RAPE CASE: HOW WERE THE ACCUSED NABBED?
Satish, Karthi, and Guna were labourers and had also worked in a lathe unit.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the trio, after robbing a two-wheeler on November 2, consumed some alcoholic drinks and were proceeding to the airport road when they noticed the couple and sexually assaulted the student.
They broke the car windows with stones and inflicted cut injuries on the student's male friend before dragging her to a deserted place that had no lighting facility, and committed the offence.
Soon after, the male friend of the survivor called up the police control at nearly 11.20 pm on Sunday.
As the police arrived at the scene, the survivor was taken to the hospital, where she was placed under treatment.
The survivor was also being provided with psychological counselling.
According to The Indian Express, a senior police official said the breakthrough in the investigation emerged from surveillance linked to the two-wheeler theft and a stolen iPhone.
“The accused had stolen a TVS 50 (two-wheeler) a week before the sexual assault. A parallel police probe on the TVS 50 was happening in which police collected dozens of CCTV clips," the report quoted the officer as saying.
“On Sunday night, after the crime, police assumed the accused walked out of the crime scene in the airport area, so they examined all surveillance cameras in the locality. In one of the clips, three people in the same age group were found," the officer said.
“TVS 50 case footage matched with the three spotted in the footage from the airport area. Police also had clues leading to their likely travel to Mettupalayam," the report quoted him as saying.
The trio had also allegedly taken the survivor's friend's iPhone during the assault. Believing the suspects might attempt to sell it, police quietly alerted all second-hand mobile shops across Coimbatore and Mettupalayam, the report claimed.
According to Saravana Sundar, the investigators scanned about 300 CCTV footages and corroborated them with inputs received from the people and identified the exit route of the suspects, who were identified and swiftly traced at their hiding spot in Vellakinaru at around 10.40 pm on Monday.
“They attacked the police personnel, forcing the latter to use minimum force to overpower them by opening fire below the knees," he said.
A police constable was injured when the trio attacked the team.
Subsequently, the three were shot in their leg and were apprehended as they attempted to flee after attacking the police team.
While one of the suspects sustained a gunshot wound in one leg, the other two were injured in both legs when the police opened fire, another official was quoted by PTI as saying.
All of them were admitted to a government medicare facility in Coimbatore along with the injured constable and are undergoing treatment.
Further investigation into the case is underway.
CM STALIN DIRECTS CHARGESHEET WITHIN A MONTH
Following the incident, Chief Minister MK Stalin directed the authorities to file a chargesheet within a month and ensure the culprits in the case received maximum punishment soon.
Condemning the sexual assault, Stalin said the tragedy that befell the young lady was inhumane. No harsh words would be adequate to condemn such heinous crimes.
“The culprits involved in the case have been traced and arrested immediately. I have ordered the police to file a chargesheet within a month and get them the maximum punishment as soon as possible," Stalin wrote in a post on social media.
He further said that “the progress that our women achieve in all fields will put an end to the patriarchal mentality of such perverted animals and will lead to our transformation into a completely progressive society."
