Nutrition during pregnancy goes far beyond managing cravings or increasing portion sizes; it is about supplying the right nutrients at the right time to support fetal development and maternal well-being. Scientific evidence increasingly shows that what a mother eats during these nine months can shape her baby's metabolism, immunity, and disease risk well into adulthood.

“Nutrition during pregnancy is not just about eating more, but about eating right," says Dr. Amodita Ahuja, Consultant Gynaecologist at PSRI Hospital, Delhi, emphasising that every bite contributes to the baby's growth and long-term health. She explains that good maternal nutrition reduces the child's future risk of lifestyle-related conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, while also supporting the mother's energy levels and postpartum recovery.
Echoing this, Dr. Geeta Jain, HOD – Obstetrics, Gynaecology & IVF and Co-founder of Maccure Hospital and Aastha Hospital, Delhi, describes maternal nutrition as the first form of medical care a baby receives. Since the developing fetus relies entirely on the mother's nutritional reserves, her diet becomes a decisive factor in determining healthy pregnancy outcomes.
During pregnancy, the demand for several micronutrients rises significantly. Iron supports oxygen transport to both mother and baby, reducing the risk of anaemia. Calcium and vitamin D are vital for developing strong bones and teeth, while folic acid is essential in early pregnancy to prevent neural tube defects.
Dr. Jain highlights that timely supplementation, when medically advised, is often necessary to meet these increased needs. She also points out the importance of hydration and gut health, which support digestion, nutrient absorption, and overall comfort during pregnancy.
Adding to this, Dr. Sucheta Talele, Gynaecologist and Obstetrician, Inamdar Hospital, Pune, notes that nutrients such as iodine and omega-3 fatty acids play a crucial role in brain development and organ formation, particularly in the early weeks of pregnancy.
While social media trends and food myths can be confusing, experts agree that pregnancy is not the time for restrictive diets. “Rather than following food myths, expectant mothers should focus on balanced, culturally appropriate meals," says Dr. Jain, stressing that consistency matters more than perfection.
According to Dr. Talele, simple dietary habits such as including fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, quality proteins, and dairy can significantly reduce the risk of complications like gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and unhealthy weight gain. A well-rounded diet also supports the mother's mental and physical well-being throughout pregnancy.
