Why Pregnancy Nutrition Needs A Personalised Approach For Every Mother

Why Pregnancy Nutrition Needs A Personalised Approach For Every Mother
Pregnancy unfolds differently for every woman. Yet, conventional guidance around prenatal nutrition often focuses on a standard checklist of nutrients. Emerging research now makes it clear that a one-size-fits-all approach to pregnancy nutrition is inadequate. In today's world shaped by diverse lifestyles, dietary patterns, and pre-existing health conditions, supporting both mother and baby requires a far more personalised and thoughtful strategy.
Dr Zeenie Sarda Girn, Senior Consultant Gynaecologist & Obstetrician, Suman Hospital, Model Town, Ludhiana, explains why tailoring nutrition during pregnancy is no longer optional, it's essential.
The Myth of Uniform Nutritional Needs
Many women begin pregnancy already nutritionally depleted. This condition, often referred to as hidden hunger, reflects deficiencies in essential micronutrients that may not present obvious symptoms. Globally, millions of women are affected by anaemia, and in several regions, more than one-third of pregnant women suffer from it.
Iron deficiency is only part of the picture. Research also points to widespread deficiencies in Vitamin D and Vitamin B12 among women of reproductive age. These findings highlight an important reality: while prenatal multivitamins are a valuable baseline, they often fall short of correcting individual nutrient gaps that exist long before conception.
Factors such as dietary habits, medical history, socioeconomic background, and even geography such as limited sunlight exposure affecting Vitamin D synthesis play a significant role in shaping a woman's nutritional requirements. This is why uniform supplementation may fail to meet individual needs.
Lifestyle and Individual Challenges
Modern lifestyles further complicate nutritional adequacy during pregnancy. Many expectant mothers juggle demanding careers, household responsibilities, and high stress levels. This often leads to irregular meal patterns, reliance on convenience foods, and diets that are calorie-sufficient but lacking in nutrient density.
These lifestyle factors directly influence which nutrients a woman may struggle to obtain. For one mother, limited outdoor exposure may increase the need for Vitamin D. For another, vegetarian or restrictive diets may require greater attention to Vitamin B12 and bioavailable iron. Universal dietary recommendations, while well-intentioned, cannot account for these variations.
The Case for a Customised Nutritional Approach
A wide range of nutrients including iron, folic acid, Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, calcium, omega-3 fatty acids, choline, iodine, and zinc are critical for fetal development and maternal health. However, how these needs are met should depend on the individual.
As Dr Girn emphasises, identifying specific deficiencies through medical evaluation allows for targeted supplementation rather than blanket recommendations. This approach moves beyond the outdated idea of “eating for two" and instead focuses on strategic nourishment for a specific mother and her baby.
The consequences of nutrient deficiencies ranging from impaired fetal growth and cognitive development to maternal fatigue and complications can be significantly reduced through precision-based nutritional care.
Nourishing the Individual, Not the Average
Breaking the cycle of nutritional deficiency requires recognising a fundamental truth: no two pregnancies are the same. A comprehensive approach that combines diverse, nutrient-dense whole foods with personalised supplementation guided by qualified healthcare professionals is key.
By tailoring nutritional support to each woman's unique needs, we empower expectant mothers to optimise their health and give their children the strongest possible foundation. In doing so, we move closer to healthier pregnancies, healthier births, and healthier generations to come.
