'Insulting Language': Kiren Rijiju Vs Mallikarjun Kharge In Heated Rajya Sabha Row Over Dhankhar
The Winter Session of Parliament began on Monday with a fierce exchange between the government and opposition in the Rajya Sabha. The war of words escalated as Union Minister Kiren Rijiju clashed with Congress Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Mallikarjun Kharge over the exit of former Vice-President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju strongly rebutted Kharge's comments, criticising the opposition for their choice of language in Parliament.
“The language used to refer to the ex-RS Chair is insulting. The words in the removal notice were humiliating," Rijiju said.
The Parliamentary Affairs Minister accused the Opposition of using “unkind" or insulting language in Parliament and in the formal removal notice for Dhankhar. He emphasises that such words undermine the dignity of the Chair, the office of the Rajya Sabha Chairman is meant to be above political disputes and treated with respect.
“The unkind words you used about the former Chairman. The removal motion you served, a copy of which we still have. The language you used against the former Vice President. The words you used in the removal notice, just think how much you have tarnished the dignity of the Chair. On this solemn occasion, my appeal is, please do not refer to anything which is not necessary on this solemn occasion."
While addressing the House, Kharge mentioned Dhankhar's abrupt departure, describing it as “unexpected and unprecedented in Parliament history." He expressed regret that the House had not been given an opportunity to bid farewell to the former Chairman.
“The Chairman, being custodian of the entire House, belongs as much to the opposition as to the government. Regardless, we wish him a very healthy life," Kharge said, emphasising the impartiality expected of the Chair.
He welcomed CP Radhakrishnan as the new Rajya Sabha Chairman and assured cooperation from opposition members to maintain parliamentary decorum. “We appeal to the Vice-President to consider both sides fairly. Don't give undue attention to BJP MPs," Kharge urged.

In his address, Kharge invoked the words of former President Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan: “A democracy is likely to degenerate into a tyranny if it does not allow opposition groups to criticise fairly, freely and frankly the policies of the government." He added, “I rise today on my own behalf and on behalf of all opposition members to heartily congratulate you on assuming the office of Chairman of Rajya Sabha."
Kharge also referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's remarks earlier in the day, hinting that the opposition is prepared to respond robustly. “We will give a ‘muh tod' jawab," he said.
