Guru Randhawa's new song, Azul, has caught everyone's attention, but the singer is now embroiled in controversy for sexualising school girls as a grown man. In the music video for Azul, Guru Randhawa plays a photographer who visits an all-girls school for their class photo. What should have been an innocent moment that school girls witness every year was turned into a ‘sexualised, pornographic and problematic' fantasy. Sonam Kapoor agrees as well.
A news publication took to Instagram to share how Guru not only sexualised school girls but also compared them to various alcohol brands – available for sale. The post quickly went viral and even caught the attention of Sonam Kapoor. The actress reacted to the post by dropping a ‘like'. Have a look here:
Guru Randhawa has been receiving intense backlash since the release of the video. Many women have called out the singer for his “problematic" depiction of young girls. Some even said that the video only promotes the idea of harassment and sexualisation of minors. Although the women in the video are adults, they are portraying young, school-going girls in a school setting.
One person wrote on Instagram, “This is the first thing that shocked me when I saw the music video. It's 2025, and ppl still don't understand the implications of such things floating around on social media. Literally, school kids are consuming this message that sexualizing school girls is okay!!" Another added, “I was horrified watching the video song. How is something so unacceptable being normalised?"
Another person wrote, “People don't realise that cinema and music have a very significant impact on people, especially in India, and we see the results of it in the behaviour of men in our society. These artists don't care about the social impact. They just care that their music sells, and videos like this make them money in the end." One comment read, “Society then uses these very portrayals to justify controlling girls rather than educating boys… It's socially dangerous."
Guru Randhawa is yet to react to the backlash. However, the singer has been sharing posts on how the song has become a top trend in India. The song was released on August 6 people started to call out the video. On August 9, Guru shared a photo with the main dancer from the video, which was liked by Tamannaah Bhatia. Earlier this week, Guru shared a clip from the song's shoot. This was liked by Varun Dhawan and Mrunal Thakur.
While it is possible that the actors have not seen the music video or heard the song, and only liked Guru's post about his success, their reactions have caught everyone's attention. Meanwhile, Guru's song has been receiving both love and backlash. While the singer has constantly thanked fans for their love, he has not reacted to the backlash. The comments on his Instagram posts have now been limited.
