People are often struck by the towering garbage mound at Ghazipur in Delhi, known for both its size and the foul smell that surrounds it. While authorities have gradually begun clearing the site, a far older and more remarkable waste mound exists thousands of kilometres away, one that dates back nearly 2,000 years and continues to fascinate historians.

Situated near the eastern bank of the River Tiber, the hill appears at first like any natural rise in the landscape, covered with grass and scattered trees. However, beneath its green surface lies neither soil nor stone. Instead, the entire structure is made up of millions of fragments of clay jars known as amphorae, once used for transporting olive oil. Archaeologists estimate that nearly 53 million such jars are buried within the mound.
Two millennia ago, Rome was the largest city in the world, and its massive population drove an enormous demand for olive oil. As shipments poured in, empty amphorae accumulated in large numbers. These containers could not be reused, as they absorbed oil, became sticky and developed an unpleasant smell. To manage the growing waste, Roman engineers devised a carefully planned disposal system. The jars were stacked methodically in layers, and lime was sprinkled over them to control odour and decay.
Today, Monte Testaccio rises about 35 metres high and stretches across roughly a kilometre, though scientists believe it was even taller in ancient times. What makes the hill particularly significant is that many of the broken jar pieces still carry seals and inscriptions from Roman merchants. These markings reveal details such as the weight of the oil, its place of origin and the exporter's identity, offering historians valuable insights into the trade networks and economic life of ancient Rome.
