Air pollution isn't the only challenge plaguing New Delhi; an escalating trash problem is also taking a toll, even in areas used daily by thousands every day. A recent video circulating online has exposed the poor condition of Anand Vihar bus interchange, one of the city's busiest transport hubs. The footage shows piles of garbage, spit marks, and gutka stains scattered across the premises, shocking many who rely on the services daily, including local commuters and travellers from other cities.
The person who shared the video questioned the basic civic sense of the station's users, emphasising that the blame lies more with careless habits than with infrastructure. The post argued that no amount of facilities can keep public spaces clean if people don't take responsibility for their actions. While reactions online were mixed, many agreed that littering and negligent behaviour remain the primary reasons public spaces fall into disrepair.
Public Carelessness Blamed For Mess
The video posted on X (Formerly Twitter) came with the caption, “Repeat after me: ‘Don't blame the government for not providing facilities- blame the people with zero civic sense creating this mess' This is the Condition of Anand Vihar, Delhi's busiest interchange."

How Did The Internet React
Reacting to the post, a user wrote, “Governments can build roads, stations and systems. They cannot build habits. Until people stop treating public spaces like personal dumping grounds, no amount of infrastructure will ever be enough. We have to learn to respect public spaces; there is no other way to have a clean India."
Another shared, “Firstly, it is the government's responsibility to keep infrastructure clean every day, which the government fails to do. When garbage piles up, no one thinks twice about throwing garbage on top of garbage. Responsibility is on both sides."
“This is also a government's job to punish those who litter it," a comment read.
An individual stated, “It all comes down to mindset. Blaming the government is the easiest escape; ‘it's their job to clean' becomes a convenient excuse. What's rarely discussed is the basic civic sense of not littering in the first place, which is every citizen's responsibility. We instinctively choose to blame poor cleaning instead of acknowledging and correcting the real cause. Until we fix that mindset, no amount of daily cleaning will ever be enough, and this will be a common plight to see in public places."
Another mentioned, “This hits HARD! Civic responsibility is a cultural value, not a government mandate. Infrastructure decays because of behaviour, not budget. India needs a digital accountability system – gamify cleanup contributions."

Another perspective shared was that the problem shouldn't be blamed on everyone. Some believe that most of the mess is caused by a small group of people, often from very poor backgrounds, who view the city as a temporary place and therefore don't feel connected or responsible for keeping it clean. They argued that addressing this issue is challenging because strict enforcement is unlikely to be accepted.
To illustrate their point, they compared airports and railway stations, noting that airports tend to be cleaner primarily because fewer people can afford to use them, which naturally limits crowd-related issues.
