Common Cancer Warning Signs People Often Ignore, According To An Oncologist
Cancer does not always begin with severe pain or dramatic symptoms. In many cases, the body sends early warning signals, but these are often ignored, misunderstood, or blamed on stress, ageing, or minor illnesses. Recognising these signs early can make a critical difference, as early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes.
“Many cancers are detected late simply because the early symptoms were dismissed," says Dr Shilpi Sharma, Associate Director & Unit Head, Surgical Oncology (Head & Neck), Max Super Speciality Hospital, Dwarka. “Awareness is the first and most important step toward early diagnosis."
One commonly overlooked sign is unexplained weight loss. Losing weight without changes in diet, exercise, or lifestyle may seem positive, but it can sometimes point to an underlying medical condition, including cancer. Similarly, persistent fatigue that does not improve despite adequate rest should not be ignored.
“If tiredness continues for weeks without a clear cause, it deserves medical evaluation," advises Dr Sharma. “The body rarely stays persistently fatigued without a reason."
Another warning sign people frequently delay checking is an unusual lump or swelling especially in the breast, neck, armpit, or groin. These lumps are often painless, which leads many to postpone consultation.
“A painless lump is not necessarily harmless," Dr Sharma explains. “Any lump that grows, changes, or does not resolve should be examined by a doctor."
Changes in bowel or bladder habits are also commonly dismissed. Long-standing constipation, persistent diarrhoea, blood in the stool, or noticeable changes in urination patterns can signal digestive or urinary tract concerns. While diet and infections can cause temporary symptoms, persistent changes require medical attention.
A persistent cough, hoarseness of voice, or difficulty swallowing is often mistaken for allergies or seasonal infections. However, when these symptoms last more than a few weeks particularly in smokers or individuals exposed to high pollution levels, they should be evaluated.
“Voice change and swallowing difficulty that linger are never symptoms to ignore," says Dr Sharma. “Duration matters."
Non-healing sores or ulcers are another red flag, especially in the mouth or on the skin. Wounds that do not heal despite proper care may indicate something more serious. Unusual bleeding or discharge such as bleeding between menstrual cycles, blood in sputum, unexplained bruising, or persistent bleeding from any site should always be investigated.
“Unexplained bleeding is one of the most important warning signs we look for," notes Dr Sharma. “Patients should seek care early rather than wait for it to stop on its own."
Changes in moles or skin appearance including shifts in size, colour, shape, or bleeding can also signal early skin cancer and should be reviewed promptly.
Listening to your body is essential. While these symptoms do not always indicate cancer, ignoring them can delay diagnosis and treatment.
“As doctors, we would always rather rule out a serious condition early than discover it late," says Dr Shilpi Sharma. “Timely consultation can save lives."
Regular health check-ups and prompt medical advice remain the strongest tools for detecting cancer early, when treatment is more effective and recovery outcomes are significantly better.
