Car and pharmaceutical exports from the European Union into the United States will face 15 per cent tariffs, according to a joint statement issued by the US and EU on August 21, AFP reported.
EU trade commissioner Maros Sefcovic said the new trade deal, “is a serious, strategic deal — and we are fully behind it.”
"A wide range of sectors, including strategic industries such as cars, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, and lumber, stand to benefit," Sefcovic added.
EU failed to get US exemption for wines
The EU has so far failed to secure a US tariff exemption for its cherished wine sector, but negotiations will continue, Sefcovic added, as per the report. Thus, a 15 per cent tariff will also apply on wine and spirits exported from the EU.“Unfortunately, here we didn't succeed. These doors are not closed forever,” Sefcovic told a press conference referring to European wine and spirits as Brussels and Washington published a joint statement detailing their trade deal.
EU-US joint statement: Key Highlights
The EU and US clinched a framework accord in July for most EU exports to face a 15 per cent US levy. However, specifics remained unclear as negotiations continued for weeks. The joint statement on August 21 gives some clarity, but “some moving parts remain”, according to the AFP report. According to the EU, a “clear maximum, all-inclusive” tariff of 15 per cent will apply to most of its exports to the US. Sefcovic also told reporters that he is confident the 15 per cent rate would apply retroactively, effective from August 1. The tariff rate on cars from the EU is at present at 27.5 per cent. Notably, the 15 per cent tariffs will kick in only once the EU introduces legislation to reduce its own tariffs on US products. Sefcovic stated that the commission was “working very hard” on this, the report added. EU Commission Chief Ursula von der Leyen in her statement said that the process has not ended and “we continue to engage with the US to agree more tariff reductions, to identify more areas of cooperation, and to create more economic growth potential.”(With inputs from AFP)Source: LiveMint
