'I Mean It': Elon Musk Says European Union 'Should Be Abolished' After Fine Against X
Elon Musk fired back at the European Union on Saturday after his social media platform, X, was hit with a substantial €120 million ($140 million) fine for breaching the bloc's digital regulations.
Addressing his 230 million followers, Musk did not mince words, asserting that the EU should be “abolished" and that sovereignty should be returned to individual countries, allowing governments to better represent their people.
“I mean it. Not kidding," Musk added when a user reposted his comment, reinforcing the seriousness of his statement. In a follow-up post, he clarified his position further, “I love Europe, but not the bureaucratic monster that is the EU."
The fine, imposed on Friday, marks the first time the European Commission has applied the Digital Services Act (DSA) to content-related violations on a social media platform.
The investigation into X was widely regarded as a test of the EU's willingness to hold major technology companies accountable under its new regulatory framework.
According to the Commission, X was found guilty of violating several provisions of the DSA.
Among the cited infractions was the misleading design of the platform's “blue checkmark," which signals verified accounts but was deemed deceptive.
The Commission also noted that X failed to provide researchers with adequate access to public data and lacked sufficient transparency regarding its advertising practices.
These issues, the EU argued, demonstrate X's failure to meet the transparency and accountability standards required by European law.
The ruling drew immediate attention in the United States as well.
Musk's criticism echoes previous positions taken by US President Donald Trump, who had at one point aligned with Musk on controversial efforts to reduce federal staffing and cut spending before the two later parted ways politically.
The fine against X is part of a broader effort by European regulators to enforce stricter rules on technology platforms, particularly regarding content moderation, transparency, and data access.

For Musk, who has positioned X as a bastion of free speech, the EU penalty represents both a financial setback and a clash with European regulatory norms.
