A woman who was heading to an airport to catch an early-morning flight was saved from a potential cab fare scam thanks to her calm and composed approach. She claimed that the driver tried to charge her nearly 40% more than the fare shown on the ride-hailing app, saying that the ride had already ended and blaming a “server glitch" at the airport.

The passenger took to X to share the incident, revealing that she had booked a cab for an airport drop-off at around 4:30 AM. During the ride, the driver allegedly told her that he did not have money for CNG. She initially assumed that he was simply short of cash and did not think much of the request. But things took a turn when they reached the airport.

“I booked a cab for an airport drop at 4:30 AM, but by the time I reached the airport, I realised the real game had started only after the ride was supposed to end. The driver first said, ‘I do not have money for CNG.’ I assumed he probably needed some cash," she wrote.

Driver Alleges Server Glitch On App

The driver then showed her a payment screen displaying a fare that was almost 40% higher than the original amount she had been quoted while booking the ride. “But once we reached the airport, he showed me a payment screen with a fare that was nearly 40% higher than the original amount. I immediately said, ‘Let the ride end first. I will check the final fare on my Uber app,’" she added.

That was when the driver claimed there was a server glitch at the airport and said the ride had already ended on his phone. The explanation raised the passenger’s suspicions, particularly because the fare displayed on his screen did not match the original booking amount. She said, “He then kept pressuring me to make the payment quickly. He even took my luggage out of the cab himself and repeatedly tried to leave the spot as quickly as possible."

“Always Verify The Ride Status And Final Fare"

However, she decided to verify the details in the app and found that the original fare was still displayed there. She added, “A few minutes after the driver left, the ride finally ended on my app, and the fare was exactly the original amount. Just imagine, if I had been in a hurry at 4:30 AM, trusted what the driver said and paid without checking my own app, I might never have realised that I had paid 40% extra."

“One thing this incident made absolutely clear: Never blindly trust ‘server glitch’ or ‘the app is not working’ as an explanation. No matter how much the driver pressures you to hurry, always verify the ride status and final fare in your app before making the payment. Because at places like airports, your hurry can become someone else’s easiest opportunity," the passenger explained.

The post has since caught the attention of social media users, who praised the woman for thinking rationally early in the morning, while others shared similar experiences.

Meanwhile, an individual shared, “I also faced the same issue; in fact, the driver stopped the car in between and asked to pay via QR code, and in the app the ride was shown as cancelled."

Someone else mentioned, “The same thing happened with me when I initially booked; the amount was looking different at the time of the final. When the final was completed, at least it had increased by 30 to 40%, and I was forced to pay on my head."
