Step into any metro station and you expect order. There are yellow lines, recorded announcements and clear instructions. But one viral video from Chennai proves that civic sense often disappears the moment the train doors slide open. What should be a simple act of letting passengers exit first instead turned into a chaotic rush and the Internet is not staying quiet about it.
The video was posted on X by a page dedicated to Chennai, with a sharp caption that read, “Indians lack civic sense everywhere from Airports to metro rail stations. Chennai metro for example, despite repeated announcements by Chennai Metro Rail to let passengers alight first before boarding, no one follows them." The clip quickly caught attention for showing a problem many commuters face daily.
In the video, passengers are seen standing close to the metro doors as the train arrives. The moment the doors open, people begin pushing their way inside, leaving little to no space for those already inside the train to get out. This results in visible confusion and mild ruckus, with commuters walking past each other in opposite directions.
What makes the post more interesting is its context. The video was shared as a response to a woman's earlier post, where she had shared a photo of a newspaper article titled, “Why Indians fall in line for Metro but become unruly in other transport systems." While metros are often praised for discipline, the video challenged that assumption with a visual proof.
Internet Gives Explanation
The comments section soon turned into a full-blown debate. One user shared a practical explanation, writing, “One reason I think the metro has got very crowded and you might have to barge in to get a seat." For many daily commuters, the rush is all about survival in packed coaches.
Others pointed to specific stations. One comment read, “Chennai Central metro is the worst. Since it's a major transport hub, it gets a lot of transient passengers as opposed to daily commuters and they treat the metro like another suburban train. Contrast that with Thousand Lights or Guindy, the discipline is far better."
Debate On Civic Sense
Another comment took a more critical approach, saying, “People using the metro are generally regarded as above average in social standing. Just imagine if this is the state of our civic sense in a metro station, what would be the condition in a normal train station. In TN no one follows any rules."
While opinions differed, the video reopened an uncomfortable conversation about civic sense.
