Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and NCP leader Ajit Pawar died along with five others when his plane crashed while landing near Baramati. DGCA confirmed no survivors. In his final tweet, Pawar highlighted key government initiatives, including PM SeTU for ITIs, TReDS platform for contractors, and revival of the Dhule cooperative spinning mill.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar and five others died on Wednesday when the private plane he was travelling in crashed while attempting to land near Baramati. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) confirmed that all six passengers on board were killed.

The Learjet 45 had taken off from Mumbai an hour earlier. Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos at the crash site, with fire and smoke rising from the mangled remains of the aircraft, while emergency services and residents rushed to assist. Ambulances transported three of the victims to Baramati Medical College, where identification is currently underway, according to the Pune Superintendent of Police.
Deputy Chief Minister Pawar's family, including his wife Sunetra Pawar and son Parth Pawar, rushed to Baramati upon hearing the news. Incidentally, Pawar's relatives, including his cousin and NCP working president Supriya Sule, had been scheduled to travel to Baramati from Delhi on the same day.
Pawar was travelling from Mumbai to attend a public meeting amid ongoing Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti elections. A team of DGCA officials arrived at the site to investigate the cause of the crash, while rescue operations continued amid a large crowd of locals who gathered to help.
This tragic accident follows several aviation-related scares for Pawar. In October 2024, a helicopter meant to pick up NCP colleague Sunil Tatkare crashed in Pune, and previous emergency landings have occurred in the region due to adverse weather.
In his final tweet before the accident, Ajit Pawar outlined several key initiatives approved by the Maharashtra government, highlighting his focus on skill development, public welfare, and economic support for entrepreneurs:
PM SeTU Scheme in ITIs: Implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Skilling and Employability Transformation (PM SeTU) programme in industrial training institutes across Nagpur, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and Pune, aimed at enhancing employability and entrepreneurship among youth, with plans to expand across the state.
TReDS Platform for Contractors: Introduction of the Trades Receivables Discounting System (TReDS) to facilitate payment of pending dues to micro, small and medium contractors involved in public works.
Revival of Dhule Cooperative Spinning Mill: A plan to rejuvenate the Jawahar Farmer Cooperative Spinning Mill with support from the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC).
Extension of Government Land Leases: Provisions to extend government land leases under the Maharashtra Land Revenue Code, 1966, and related regulations, particularly for 30-year lease agreements.
Stamp Duty Exemption: A decision to waive stamp duty on the sale and purchase of enemy properties under central or state government control.
Pawar, a seasoned politician, served as Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister under multiple administrations and was instrumental in shaping state policies over several decades. His death marks a significant loss to Maharashtra's political and administrative landscape.
Investigations into the exact cause of the crash are ongoing, with officials emphasising that a detailed DGCA inquiry will determine the circumstances surrounding the accident.
