In an early morning press briefing held at Baramati on Saturday (January 31, 2026), NCP SP leader Sharad Pawar said that it was Ajit Pawar's wish for the two NCPs to reunite and that his party wished the same. He also said that he was unaware of Sunetra Pawar's swearing-in today, and that there was no proposal or discussion about it within the family.
Sunetra Pawar, joined by sons Parth and Jay Pawar, reached Mumbai in the early hours on Saturday. NCP's legislative party meeting is to be held in Mumbai at 2 p.m., in which the legislative party leader will be chosen by the party. A small swearing-in ceremony will take place at Raj Bhavan thereafter, sources said.

“It was Dada's wish (that the two parties should reunite). It should be fulfilled, is our wish,” Mr. Pawar said, adding that the death of Ajit Pawar was a tremendous loss for the State.
When asked if he was open to joining hands with the BJP, if the reunification talks happened, he asked, “What is the relation of the BJP? In the talks we had (between Ajit Pawar and NCP SP leaders), there was no discussion about it.”
The statements are significant on the backdrop of the differences within NCP itself and in NCP and NCP SP, over the issue. After Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar's sudden demise in an air crash on January 28, 2026, several NCP and NCP SP leaders demanded the reunification of NCP and NCP SP. The sentiment echoed in Baramati as well.
“Talks were going on for the last six months that both the parties should reunite. Those talks were going on between Ajit Pawar and Jayant Patil. Those talks halted due to Ajit Pawar's accident,” Mr. Pawar said.
When asked if he was consulted about reunification or about Sunetra Pawar, he said there was no proposal or discussion within the family thereafter.
“We haven't yet discussed it. What I read is the discussion is going on in Mumbai. Sunil Tatkare, Praful Patel, who head that party are discussing it. It is their party. They have the right to decide what happens in it. It seems that they have taken a decision. We will not say anything about it,” he said.
NCP SP sources indicated that Sharad Pawar will likely leave from Baramati for Mumbai on Saturday (January 31) afternoon.
Mr. Pawar said he was not aware that Sunetra Pawar was being sworn in, as he was not told about it, neither was he invited for it. When asked if he was happy that a woman Pawar family member will become the DCM, he said, “It is a time of grief and mourning. We don't know how to console each other. At such a time, if someone is coming ahead to take responsibility, it will give confidence to the ordinary people.”
Mr. Pawar said there was no discussion about whether his party will join hands with the BJP. When asked if he was open to joining hands with the BJP or that any ministerial berths will be given to Supriya Sule and Rohit Pawar, he said, “What is the relation of BJP? There was no talk about it. I don't know (about ministerial offer for daughter Supriya Sule or grand-nephew Rohit Pawar).” He was asked if it was true that there were discussions about Union Ministership for Supriya Sule or State ministerial berth for Rohit Pawar.
He said that the family was not consulted since Ajit Pawar's demise. “Family is there to help each other when needed,” he said. “There is no discussion in the family....(Earlier) Talks were going on within the family. They were in a positive direction. That stopped due to his death. I don't know what will happen now,” he added.
When asked if all these things were happening in a hurry, he said, “Why are you asking me about the hurry?”
He said he did not know who Naresh Arora was, when asked about media reports that he was involved in talks decision about the Deputy Chief Ministerial position. Naresh Arora is a political strategist and co-founder of designboxed.com, who had helped design Ajit Pawar's political campaign.
Maharashtra Minister Girish Mahajan said the BJP will be happy if both the NCPs reunite, and that it will their internal decision.
Shiv Sena UBT MP Sanjay Raut slammed the BJP, calling it an opportunistic party. “Maharashtra is in a state of shock. Each household is grieving. If the swearing-in is going to happen today, we don't have anything to say,” he said.
Meanwhile, NCP leader Sunil Tatkare refused to answer if Sharad Pawar will be called for the swearing in ceremony.
