Nifty 50: 10 Biggest Single-Day Surges In The Last 5 Years

It is pointing to a sharp gap-up start for Indian markets on Tuesday, driven by the long-awaited reduction in US tariffs on Indian imports.
“If it's less than a 1,000-point rally, it would be disappointing," said Jayesh Mehta of Bank of America.

The GIFT Nifty extended its gains following the announcement of the long-awaited India-US trade deal. The index rose 1,110 points, or 4.4%, to 26,245. If the momentum sustains, February 3 could rank among the top 10 best trading days for the Nifty 50 in the past five years.
The sentiment boost could be broader, as the agreement removes a major overhang that had weighed on Indian equities in recent months, leaving India among the weaker performers in the emerging markets pack. With the final tariff set at 18%, India now faces one of the lowest US tariff levels among emerging markets, after South Korea.
Performance trends underline the divergence. Over the past month, the MSCI Emerging Markets Index has risen 4.7%, while the Nifty 50 has slipped 4.6%. Foreign portfolio investors were also said to be holding their most bearish positions on Indian equities since the pandemic.
“I think there will be a short squeeze. Not only that, but a lot of foreign investors who have been selling for some time could turn buyers in the Indian market," market veteran Madhu Kela told CNBC-TV18.
Export-oriented companies are expected to be in focus, including textile players such as Gokaldas Exports, seafood exporters like Avanti Feeds and Apex Foods, and auto-related names such as Bharat Forge. Several other export-linked sectors are also likely to see strong interest.
Kela added that financials could emerge as indirect beneficiaries of the sentiment shift. Large, liquid names — including major private banks and NBFCs — may attract sizeable foreign inflows, as big global investors typically deploy capital in stocks that can absorb large allocations.
