Young India Is Stressed

Young India Is Stressed, Burnt Out And Facing Health Risks That Could Last A Lifetime
Feeling exhausted after a hectic workweek is normal. But when stress becomes a constant companion rather than an occasional visitor, it starts affecting far more than your mood.
What many dismiss as “just work pressure" can quietly trigger changes throughout the body, increasing the risk of serious lifestyle diseases much earlier in life than expected.
For India’s young workforce, this is becoming an increasingly urgent concern. The latest Deloitte Global Gen Z and Millennial Survey 2025 found that 33% of Gen Z and 29% of millennials in India experience stress or anxiety all or most of the time.
The survey also revealed that 36% of Gen Z and 39% of millennials identify work as a major source of stress and anxiety, highlighting just how deeply workplace pressures are affecting young adults.
Dr Sameer Bhati, Public Health Analyst, says burnout should no longer be viewed as only a mental health issue. “Chronic stress doesn’t stop at the mind—it gradually affects the body’s physiology, making people vulnerable to several long-term health conditions," he explains.
When Stress Starts Changing Your Body
Every stressful situation triggers the release of hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline, which help the body respond to immediate challenges. The problem begins when these hormones remain elevated for weeks or months because the stress never truly ends.
Dr Bhati highlights that persistently high stress hormone levels can disrupt normal metabolism, raise blood pressure, weaken the immune system, and alter appetite regulation. Over time, these changes increase the risk of hypertension, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, insulin resistance, and obesity.
In other words, what begins as workplace burnout today could become tomorrow’s chronic illness.
Burnout Also Changes Everyday Habits
One of burnout’s biggest hidden dangers is the way it quietly reshapes daily routines. Young professionals struggling with constant pressure often skip meals or rely on processed snacks, spend long hours sitting, avoid regular exercise, and continue scrolling through screens long after work ends.
These seemingly small lifestyle changes, when combined with chronic stress, create the perfect conditions for lifestyle-related disorders to develop much earlier in life.
Dr Bhati notes that these behavioural shifts don’t occur in isolation—they reinforce one another, making it increasingly difficult to maintain healthy habits.
The Sleep-Stress Cycle That Is Hard to Break
Sleep is one of the first things burnout disrupts—and one of the biggest reasons recovery becomes difficult.
Stress and burnout often lead to poor sleep quality or inadequate sleep, which has been linked to weight gain, hypertension, impaired glucose tolerance, weakened immunity, and cardiovascular disease. Poor sleep also disrupts hormones that regulate hunger, metabolism, and stress, creating a vicious cycle where inadequate rest fuels stress, and stress further damages sleep.
Breaking this cycle becomes increasingly difficult unless both stress and lifestyle habits are addressed together.
Why This Is Becoming a Public Health Concern
The impact of burnout extends beyond individual well-being. India is already battling a growing burden of non-communicable diseases, many of which are responsible for premature illness and death.
As chronic stress goes unnoticed among younger adults, healthcare professionals are beginning to see conditions once associated with middle age appearing much earlier. This trend could increase healthcare costs, reduce workforce productivity, and affect quality of life across an entire generation.
What Can Help Break the Cycle?
Addressing burnout requires more than occasional vacations or weekend breaks. It calls for changes at both the workplace and the individual level.
Dr Bhati says employers should promote healthier work environments by encouraging manageable workloads, supporting employee well-being, and prioritising mental health. At the same time, individuals should focus on maintaining a regular sleep schedule, staying physically active, eating balanced meals, managing stress, and avoiding prolonged sedentary behaviour.
He also recommends periodic health check-ups to monitor risk factors such as high blood pressure, elevated blood sugar, and obesity, allowing potential problems to be detected before they develop into chronic diseases.
