AR Rahman recently found himself at the centre of controversy after describing Vicky Kaushal-starrer Chhaava as a “divisive" film. The composer's comments have now drawn a sharp response from actor-politician Kangana Ranaut, who accused Rahman of prejudice and bias, claiming she has “never met someone more hateful" in the film industry.
Kangana's Instagram Post Targets AR Rahman
Taking to her Instagram Stories on Saturday, Kangana shared a screenshot from Rahman's BBC Asian Network interview and wrote, “Dear @arrahman ji, I face so much prejudice and partiality in the film industry because I support a saffron party, yet I must say I have not come across a man more prejudiced and hateful than you."
Her post quickly circulated online, adding fuel to the already simmering debate around Chhaava and Rahman's remarks.
‘You Refused to Even Meet Me': Kangana on Emergency
Kangana further alleged that Rahman had declined to engage with her directorial venture Emergency. She claimed, “I desperately wanted to narrate my directorial Emergency to you. Forget narration, you even refused to meet me. I was told you don't want to be part of a propaganda film."
Calling his stance ironic, Kangana added that Emergency was widely appreciated by critics. “Ironically, Emergency was called a masterpiece by all critics. Even opposition party leaders sent me fan letters appreciating the film for its balanced and compassionate approach, but you are blinded by your hate. I feel sorry for you," she wrote, ending her post with the hashtag #Emergency.
What AR Rahman Said About Chhaava
The controversy stems from Rahman's comments on Chhaava, released in 2025. Speaking about the film, the composer said, “It is a divisive film. I think it cashed in on divisiveness, but I think the core of it is to show bravery."
His statement sparked strong reactions across political and film circles, with opinions split over whether historical dramas should be viewed purely as art or through a political lens.

Kangana Ranaut was last seen in Emergency, a political drama that she also directed and co-produced. The film features her as former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and chronicles the 21-month Emergency period from 1975 to 1977.
