X to permanently suspend accounts uploading, generating illegal content, says Elon Musk
Social media platform X reiterated today that it will remove all kinds of illegal content, including child sexual abuse material, and permanently suspend accounts uploading and promoting such content.
Grok owner Elon Musk had previously warned of serious implications for users who misuse the artificial intelligence (AI) assistant to create illegal content, adding that those who promote or amplify such posts will face the same consequences.
“Anyone using Grok to make illegal content will suffer the same consequences as if they upload illegal content,” Musk wrote in response to a post on Friday late evening. “We take action against illegal content on X, including Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), by removing it, permanently suspending accounts,” wrote X's safety team in a post, responding to Musk's January 3 remark. This was later reposted by the platform's global government affairs team.
Musk was responding to a post addressing the backlash Grok was receiving, which drew a parallel between the AI assistant and a pen and its writer. The user, DogeDesigner, wrote, “Some people are saying Grok is creating inappropriate images. But that's like blaming a pen for writing something bad. A pen doesn't decide what gets written. The person holding it does. Grok works the same way. What you get depends a lot on what you put in.”
Musk and co's response to Meity's non-compliance notice
This comes amid criticism of Grok for allegedly allowing users to misuse its image-editing feature to generate thousands of non-consensual, sexualised images of women, children, and public figures, including Bollywood celebrities.
In response, the Union ministry of electronics and information technology (MeitY) issued a notice to X, accusing the platform of failing to comply with statutory due diligence requirements under India's IT rules and seeking an action-taken report.
The ministry said the misuse amounted to gross violations of laws governing obscene, pornographic, and harmful content and reiterated that platforms are legally responsible for preventing the spread of such material.
The X team has also revealed that it will be working with the “local governments and law enforcement” agencies of countries, as and when necessary, in such cases.
