Woman Takes Rs 26 Lakh Relocation Bonus From US Company, But Now She Says ‘Not Ready To Move’
A California company is facing a tricky situation after one of its employees refused to relocate, even after accepting a $30,000 (Rs 26 lakh) relocation bonus. The employee was hired last year with an agreement to move by August this year. She signed the contract, received the bonus, but now says she won't relocate.
The employee is currently working remotely and doing her job from a distance. Since she accepted the relocation bonus and signed a formal agreement, the company is now unsure what steps to take next.
The Employee Signed an Agreement, But Now Refuses to Move
The company shared its problem in a Reddit post, explaining how it offered a Rs 26 lakh relocation bonus as part of the job offer. The agreement clearly stated that the employee must relocate by August 2025. Although the employee agreed and received the money, she is now refusing to follow through.
The HR team said the employee's work performance “hasn't been great overall." They asked the Reddit community for advice on whether to extend the deadline by another 60 or 90 days or proceed with terminating the employment.

Social Media Users Weigh in With Strong Opinions
The Reddit post quickly got attention, receiving over 140 upvotes and a flood of comments. Many people gave their opinions on how the company should handle the situation.
A user suggested giving the employee 60 more days to relocate. If she still doesn't move, they should ask her to return the $30,000 and let her go. The user also recommended that companies should avoid giving relocation money upfront in the future and instead pay after the employee has moved.
“Yeah, I'd give 60 more days. If she doesn't relocate, she pays back the $30k and is let go. Also, next time, reimburse employees after they move, not upfront. Or pay for the move but don't give any money directly to them until after they've moved," the user said.
Another commenter hoped that the relocation agreement clearly stated the employee must repay the bonus if she doesn't relocate. “I'm hoping the relocation agreement has language in it stating she has to pay back the money if she decides not to move," the user wrote.
Others were less patient, saying that since the agreement was already signed, there was no reason to give extra time. They advised the company to remind the employee of her responsibilities and start deducting the bonus from her salary if needed.

A person shared a firm opinion, “Honestly, no need to give her additional time if the agreement clearly stated she had to relo by 8/25. As long as the agreement says she will have to pay back the money if she doesn't relocate or if she voluntarily leaves, I will give a heads up that you are angling to start garnishing her wages."
The situation is now raising important questions about how companies should handle relocation agreements and whether giving upfront bonuses is a good idea. The company still seems unsure about its next steps but is considering all advice from the online community.
