A powerful winter storm is sweeping across a huge portion of the United States this weekend, putting more than 180 million people under weather alerts for heavy snow, dangerous ice, and bitterly cold conditions from the Southwest all the way to the Northeast.
The system kicked off Friday afternoon with snow and icy conditions hitting parts of New Mexico and the Texas Panhandle. As evening arrived, areas like Dallas faced a messy blend of wintry precipitation, while Oklahoma City picked up some snow.
The peak danger arrives on Saturday. Early in the day, snow and ice are expected to spread from Texas through Arkansas and into Tennessee. By afternoon, the band of precipitation pushes farther north, bringing snow to cities including St. Louis, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, and Charleston, West Virginia.
Come evening, the storm covers an enormous area, reaching from New Mexico across to the Carolinas. Farther south, places like Dallas, Shreveport in Louisiana, Memphis in Tennessee, and Raleigh in North Carolina could see freezing rain or a wintry mix that makes roads especially treacherous.
The storm continues moving east on Sunday. Morning hours bring snow from Wichita in Kansas through Cincinnati, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia. Freezing rain becomes a major concern around sunrise in spots such as Houston, Memphis, Atlanta, and Raleigh.
By midday Sunday, New York City is forecast to start seeing snow, while areas around Washington, D.C., might transition to a wintry mix.
A broad zone from New Mexico through the Ohio Valley and up into Maine will pick up snow that's heavy enough to require plowing, as per a report from New York Times. The deepest accumulations are likely across the Texas Panhandle into southern Missouri, then from the Ohio Valley through the Appalachians and much of New England.
In the Northeast, large sections stand to receive more than a foot of snow, with 6 to 12 inches closer to the coast from Virginia up through southern New England. The current forecast for New York City is predicting 8 to 12 inches!
With travel expected to become hazardous and risks of power outages from ice-covered lines or heavy snow, officials have moved quickly. According to a report from ABC, at least 16 states have issued states of emergency as the storm approaches: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. Washington, D.C., has also declared an emergency.
These declarations help mobilize resources, activate emergency operations, and prepare for potential widespread disruptions. Authorities are urging residents in affected areas to stay off the roads when possible, stock up on essentials, and monitor local updates closely as conditions evolve. Unless it is absolutely necessary, you ought to stay inside.
