Winter Heaters Causing Dry Nose And Eyes? ENT Specialists Share Simple, Effective Fixes
When winter sets in, room heaters make indoor life comfortable but they also quietly strip the air of humidity. The result? Your nose and eyes pay the price. Dry, heated air disrupts the natural protective lining of the nasal passages and the tear film of the eyes, leading to stuffiness, crusting, irritation, scratchiness, and sometimes even nosebleeds.
According to Dr Meena Agrawal, Senior Consultant ENT Surgeon, PSRI Hospital, this happens because heaters reduce indoor moisture to levels at which the mucous membranes can no longer stay adequately hydrated. “Once the natural moisture barrier is disturbed, the nose becomes prone to blockage, bleeding, and discomfort, while the eyes feel gritty and dry because the tear layer is compromised," she explains.
Echoing this, Dr Rajesh Bhardwaj, Consultant, MedFirst ENT Centre, adds that the nose's role is to moisten and purify the air we breathe. “When the surrounding air is excessively dry, the nasal lining becomes delicate, leading to burning, sneezing, crusting, and even recurrent nosebleeds. At the same time, reduced humidity weakens the tear film, causing redness, heaviness, and blurred vision."
Both specialists agree that the first step is correcting indoor humidity. Dr Agrawal recommends using an ultrasonic humidifier in the bedroom at night, ideally maintaining humidity around 50%. A simple hack she suggests: hang damp towels over radiator vents to allow gentle re-moistening of the air.
Dr Bhardwaj offers equally practical alternatives: keep a bowl of water near the heater so evaporation can restore moisture naturally, allow some fresh air circulation during the day, and use indoor plants to help regulate humidity.
Smarter Nasal Care (That Doesn't Backfire)
For nasal dryness, Dr Agrawal prefers nasal gels over sprays. “Gels last longer and form a protective layer when applied in a thin coating twice daily," she says. She also advises steam inhalation for 10 minutes with a few drops of eucalyptus oil added to hot water to naturally ease congestion.
Dr Bhardwaj leans toward saline-based solutions. “Saline sprays or nasal irrigation keep the lining moist, flush out irritants, and do so without causing drug dependence," he notes. He also recommends applying a small amount of medical-grade petroleum jelly or a nasal emollient around the nostrils before bed to prevent crusting.
Both doctors caution against frequent use of decongestant sprays, which can worsen dryness over time.
Eye Care Needs Equal Attention
Dry eyes are not just uncomfortable, they are a sign that the tear film is failing. Dr Agrawal suggests using a thick lubricating eye ointment at night for prolonged protection while sleeping. During the day, she advises following the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds to prevent tear evaporation, especially during screen use.
Dr Bhardwaj recommends preservative-free artificial tears several times a day and reducing screen exposure in heated rooms. Wearing protective glasses outdoors in cold, windy weather can also prevent moisture loss from the eyes.
Hydration Isn't Just About Water
Internal hydration plays a surprising role in keeping mucosal linings healthy.
“Broth-based soups twice a day can nourish the sinuses far better than plain water," says Dr Agrawal. Warm fluids help maintain internal moisture without added sugars.
Dr Bhardwaj agrees, adding that herbal teas, warm water, adequate sleep, and avoiding smoking and excessive caffeine all contribute to healthier nasal and eye tissues during winter.
The Takeaway
Heaters aren't the enemy, dry air is. By restoring humidity, choosing the right nasal and eye care methods, and supporting the body with proper hydration, you can enjoy winter warmth without the discomfort of dry nose and eyes.
Small changes in your room and routine can make a significant difference to how you breathe, see, and feel through the season.
