Comfortable, Ergonomic Furniture In School Can Help Kids Learn Better, Here's How
Ergonomics is the science of designing environments, tools, and habits that fit the human body, not the other way around. It's about how we sit, stand, study, and move through our lives, ensuring that the spaces we occupy support our comfort, focus, and long-term health. In adults, ergonomics often means better office chairs or improved workstation design. But research increasingly shows that its roots and real impact lie much earlier, in childhood.
The word ‘ergonomics' might sound familiar, but it isn't quite mainstream. Ganesh Sonawane, co-founder and CEO of Frido, shares, “Most people encounter it at a stage in life when it's an absolute necessity rather than an early habit." Until someone begins working full-time and spending hours at a desk, they rarely understand the benefits of an ergonomic chair that supports the spine and reduces fatigue.
Comfort in School Helps Kids Learn
A growing body of global and medical evidence now confirms that introducing ergonomics education early in preschools and primary schools can significantly shape how children grow, learn, and even think. And for India, a country of over 250 million school-going children, that's not a niche idea; it's a national opportunity waiting to be seized.
Studies across Montessori and early learning environments demonstrate that macro-ergonomics, encompassing classroom layout, lighting, furniture, and even sound, directly impact how children develop and engage. When classrooms are designed with posture and movement in mind, teachers report better attention spans, less stress, and higher motivation among students.
Children learn best when their bodies are comfortable. An ergonomic classroom allows young minds to focus on ideas rather than discomfort. This philosophy can extend to everyday essentials – school shoes that cushion and support natural foot movement instead of restricting it, bags that distribute weight evenly to avoid spinal strain, and seats designed to encourage healthy posture instead of forcing slouching. “These choices, when taught and introduced early, can help children develop stronger musculoskeletal habits that stay with them through life," shares Ganesh.
Posture, an Unnoticed issue in India
In India, posture-related problems are often seen as adult issues, but evidence suggests they begin much earlier. With increased screen time and heavy schoolbags, even primary school students are developing back and neck pain. Ganesh says, “Randomised controlled trials have shown that parent-centred ergonomic education, i.e. teaching parents how to set up home study spaces, adjust chair heights, or schedule movement breaks, leads to measurable improvements in children's posture within just a few months."
These are small, practical changes, yet they prevent chronic musculoskeletal issues that might otherwise surface decades later. In a country where healthcare often focuses on treatment rather than prevention, early ergonomic literacy could reduce long-term public health costs while improving quality of life.

A study published in PubMed found that students in ergonomically optimised environments had improved comfort and lower fatigue, leading to better focus and classroom engagement. Similarly, a review in ESMED Medical Research Archives highlighted that simple interventions like ergonomic furniture and posture education can substantially reduce musculoskeletal disorders among school children.
The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 already recognises the importance of holistic development, but it rarely addresses how learning environments shape health and focus. Ganesh believes, “Integrating ergonomics into teacher training and school infrastructure norms could bridge that gap. Imagine if every new school in India underwent an ergonomic audit assessment or if parent-teacher meetings included short posture demonstrations. These small shifts can yield lifelong benefits, from better learning outcomes to stronger physical well-being."
