Who is Nitin Nabin, set to be youngest BJP president after emerging sole contender for top post?
New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to get its new national president today after Nitin Nabin was elected unopposed for the top party post on Monday. Nabin, who is a five-time MLA from Bihar, is going to be the youngest-ever BJP national president.
Nabin emerged as the sole candidate for the key post after the BJP leaders proposed only his name after the period of withdrawal of nominations ended. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior BJP leaders filed nomination papers in his support.
“I hereby announce that only one name, that of Shri Nitin Nabin, has been proposed for the post of National President of Bharatiya Janata Party,” K Laxman, the Returning Officer for presidential election, said in a statement.
Laxman said 37 sets of nomination papers were filed in favour of Nabin as the BJP national president and all nomination papers were found to be valid.
Formal announcement today
The BJP will formally announce Nabin as its president today, marking a big generational shift in its top organisational leadership role. Born in 1980, the same year the BJP was founded, the 45-year-old low-profile leader is the youngest-ever to occupy the post. Nabin's appointment as BJP chief comes at a time when the saffron party looks to further cement its position and expand its footprint with key elections around the corner in several states.
Nabin resigned as the minister for law and justice, urban development and housing in the Bihar government after his appointment as the working president of the BJP on December 14. He will succeed JP Nadda. Nadda, who is the union health minister, has been at the helm of the party's affairs for an extended period since 2020.
Upcoming state polls to be major test for Nabin
With the BJP seeking to expand its presence, the upcoming Assembly elections in the opposition-ruled states of West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerala as well as BJP-ruled Assam will be a major challenge for Nabin, who has been chosen over several seasoned leaders. The upcoming state polls will give him a golden chance to prove his mettle as the organisational head of the party.
Who is Nitin Nabin?
Nabin, a Kayasth by caste, began his political journey with the Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha, the youth wing of the BJP, in 2006 after the death of his father Nabin Kishore Prasad Sinha, who was a BJP MLA.
Nabin garnered the attention of the BJP central leadership during the Chhattisgarh polls in 2023 when the BJP wrested power from the Congress government, led by then chief minister Bhupesh Baghel. Nabin was party's co-in charge of the elections. The BJP also performed well in the Lok Sabha polls, winning 10 of the 11 seats in the state.
He has won several elections with huge margins. He won the first bypoll he contested in 2006 by nearly 60,000 votes. He won the latest one, earlier this year, by more than 51,000 votes.
