Where Crime Ruled & Chaos Reigned: How Dhurandhar Steps Into Lyari’s Murky Shadows In Pakistan
Fronted by Ranveer Singh and directed by Aditya Dhar, the new film Dhurandhar reportedly draws inspiration from the long-running Pakistani anti-crime crackdown known as Operation Lyari, a multifaceted security campaign aimed at dismantling powerful criminal syndicates and restoring law and order to the Lyari Town area of Karachi. Lyari, one of the city's oldest and most densely populated settlements, had historically transformed from a stronghold of political parties, particularly the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), into a notorious “no-go zone" ruled by heavily armed gangs involved in drug trafficking, extortion, and targeted killings.
The roots of the conflict trace back to the 1980s, when an influx of weapons and drugs, a consequence of the Soviet-Afghan War, intensified local gang rivalries. These criminal factions became deeply entwined with local political dynamics, often receiving patronage from political parties to maintain vote banks or confront rivals. Key figures in this violent underworld included notorious gangsters like Rehman Dakait and his successor, Uzair Jan Baloch, who often operated through seemingly legitimate fronts, such as the infamous People's Aman Committee (PAC), which effectively governed Lyari outside the conventional framework of law enforcement for a time.
Operation Lyari was not a single, brief military action but a protracted series of operations, notably commencing in earnest in April 2012 and escalating significantly in September 2013 under the broader Karachi Operation. The initial 2012 phase, primarily police-led, faced intense resistance and was quickly deemed a failure, as security forces were often unable to penetrate the gang strongholds. It was the subsequent, more aggressive operation led by the Pakistan Rangers, a federal paramilitary force, that finally began to curb the endemic violence.
The Rangers-led operation over the following years targeted and neutralised key gang leaders, including the eventual apprehension of Uzair Jan Baloch in 2014 and the killing of others like Baba Ladla in a shootout in 2017. The deployment of paramilitary forces proved necessary due to the sheer level of armament and organisation of the Lyari gangs. The operation successfully reduced the crime rate in the area, but it exposed the deep-seated connections between the criminal underworld, local politics, and elements within the law enforcement apparatus, making it a highly sensitive and politically charged mission that transcended typical anti-gang activity.

The cinematic adaptation reportedly focuses on the intelligence and covert aspects of this crackdown, likely drawing on the infiltration required to track and neutralise the criminal networks, mirroring the real-life complexities of operating in a highly volatile and entrenched urban war zone.
