West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee blames EC, BJP for helicopter ban, warns of confrontation ahead of Bengal polls

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday accused the Election Commission and BJP of political bias over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the state. Speaking at a rally in Bongaon's Matua headquarters, she claimed her helicopter was blocked, criticized the SIR process for potentially targeting genuine voters, and vowed to protect the rights of Bengal's electorate ahead of the 2026 assembly polls.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday even blamed that her helicopter was not allowed to fly and thus leading to a “confrontation” much ahead of the elections. In a scathing attack on Election Commission of India and BJP over SIR of electoral rolls in Bengal, Banerjee said "if she is hit in Bengal, she will make the whole country tremble."
“The time was given at 12.30PM. Then, I was informed that helicopter will not be flying. I did not use the helicopter for the last 7–8 months. The election has not started but confrontation has already begun. It was good for me as it gave me an opportunity to come by road and meet the people. It helped my public outreach on my way by car to Bongaon,” Banerjee said, as she reached Bongaon and addressed a public rally in Matua headquarters.
“I want to tell BJP not to play a game with me. The game I will play in turn, you will never be able to catch me. The whole central government, with all agencies, cannot touch me. When I touch something, I see it till the end. You (Centre/BJP) can stop my helicopter, stop my route…but the road shows me the way,” Banerjee noted.
Banerjee attacked the Election Commission of India (ECI) over the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) electoral rolls in Bengal. “Will the list be prepared from the BJP office? ECI ‘s role is to maintain an impartial stand but it has become BJP's Commission,” Banerjee said.
Banerjee said SIR takes two years' time and attacked BJP-ECI over the exercise and said that not a single voter's name should be deleted. “SIR takes two years. It happened in 2002 and took two years. No genuine voters' names can be deleted, who have voted in 2024, and they cannot be driven out. The list cannot be finalized from the BJP office. The Election Commission's work is to function impartially,” she asserted.
“You will see how the situation becomes dangerous when the draft List is published,” she warned. ECI will publish the draft roll on December 9. “You can do SIR taking-2-3 years' time…we would help people after the draft roll is published,” she said, empathizing with the BLOs. “The BLOs cannot upload the forms and there is no internet.”
In a bid to woo the Matua votebank ahead of 2026 assembly polls, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee held an anti-SIR rally today at Matua headquarters of Bongaon. At a time when BJP and other Hindu organizations are going all out on CAA application drive, Banerjee is trying to capture the Matua votebank which has been voting for BJP.
“You are playing with religion, intimidate people and you want to capture Bengal. If you speak in Bengali, one is referred to as a Bangladeshi. Bengalis have participated most in the freedom movement. Every district in Bengal has a different accent There are multiple accents and versions of spoken Bengali in various districts of Bengal,” she said.
Banerjee said someone cannot be labelled as Bangladeshi. “I love Bangladesh.. there are geographical and political boundaries…” she said.
I don't do votebank politics, I do people's politics. Don't get intimidated. Till we are in power, we will not allow you (Matuas and anyone) be thrown out of the country
“If you want illegal infiltrators, why are you doing SIR drama in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. While there are four election bound states, you are not doing SIR in Assam,” Banerjee said, adding, Bengal and its people are not scared of BJP.Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now!
