‘We’re Ready, Are You’: Congress To DMK As Polls Near Amid Seat‑Sharing Talks Delay
With months left for the Tamil Nadu Assembly election likely in April, two senior Congress leaders have questioned the ruling DMK over delays in starting seat-share discussions.
Lok Sabha MPs Manickam Tagore and Karti Chidambaram said the Congress had already formed a five-member panel for talks, but the DMK had not yet set up its own committee.
According to an NDTV report quoting sources, the DMK said party chief and Chief Minister MK Stalin plans to begin discussions only after election dates are announced. Sources said holding talks now would divert attention from government schemes and projects.
Manickam Tagore said the Congress formed its committee on December 1 and has been waiting for nearly 36 days.
Chidambaram said former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi had reminded senior DMK leader Kanimozhi to form a committee. He said it has been ten days since that meeting but no action has been taken.
“We have formed a five-member committee… the question should be asked to the DMK. Why is there a delay?" he said.
The Congress has been allied with the DMK since 2016 and has been on the winning side in the 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha elections and the 2021 Assembly poll. However, it has not had a share in the government.
Several Congress leaders, including Tagore, have demanded power-sharing assurances. Sources told NDTV the party wants at least six ministerial berths.
The DMK is reportedly reluctant to share power, saying it could affect administrative efficiency and create internal disputes. The party is also said to be in talks with the DMDK, which is less likely to demand a share in power.
Some political observers believe the Congress may be reconsidering options, especially with actor Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam set to contest for the first time. Though no formal talks are confirmed, sources within the Congress say an offer of over 60 seats and cabinet berths from TVK is appealing.
