Buffett himself maintains a famously thrifty lifestyle, living in his long-owned Omaha home and avoiding extravagant purchases, finding happiness in non-material values.
In his last and final annual letter to shareholders of Berkshire Hathaway, billionaire investing mogul Warren Buffett hit back at the notion that staggering and jaw-dropping net worths equate to excellence. “Greatness does not come about through accumulating great amounts of money, great amounts of publicity or great power in government,” Buffett wrote in the letter published this Monday, reports Fortune. Despite having a net worth of $150 billion and being the 11th richest person in the world, Warren Buffett, one of the most successful billionaire investors of all time, doesn't spend on mansions and drive high-end cars. He's been thrifty throughout his seven-decade professional career, despite adding billions to his name.
“When you help someone in any of thousands of ways, you help the world,” Buffett continued. “Kindness is costless but also priceless. Whether you are religious or not, it's hard to beat The Golden Rule as a guide to behavior…Keep in mind that the cleaning lady is as much a human being as the Chairman.”
In the letter, Buffet has warned that corporate greed and envy are fueling an escalating cycle of CEO salaries, taking a dig at world's richest man Elon Musk. Buffett's comments come amid fresh debate over executive pay after Tesla shareholders approved a record-breaking $1 trillion compensation package for CEO Elon Musk last week.

Warren Buffett's thrifty lifestyle
Warren Buffett is well known for his frugal lifestyle — eating at McDonald's, driving an old car, and staying in his modest Nebraska home. Despite his enormous wealth, he hasn't changed his habits. Instead of seeking power through luxury, Buffett says he finds real value and success in non-material things.Warren Buffett believes everyone deserves kindness and respect, whether they run a billion-dollar company or work an entry-level job. He doesn't try to impress even the world's top business leaders with luxury meals or flashy spending. The Berkshire Hathaway chief is famous for his cheap meals at McDonald's, where he typically orders menu items costing under $4.
He once even took Bill Gates to McDonald's instead of an upscale restaurant. Gates has recalled a visit to a McDonald's in Hong Kong where Buffett pulled out coupons to pay for their food — a moment that showed how seriously he takes his frugal habits.

Warren Buffett's still lives in Omaha house
Buffett applies the same philosophy to major purchases. He still lives in the Omaha home he bought for $31,500 in 1958. The five-bedroom house is now worth about $1.3 million, but Buffett says he would never trade it because of the memories of raising his three children there. He also avoids splurging on expensive cars. At one point, he drove a 20-year-old vehicle because he believed it was safer than a high-powered luxury car. “I do not think that standard of living equates with cost of living beyond a certain point,” Buffett said at a Berkshire Hathaway shareholders meeting in 2014. “My life would not be happier…it'd be worse if I had six or eight houses or a whole bunch of different things I could have. It just doesn't correlate.” Whether it be mansions or sports cars, Buffett steers clear of making major purchases that reflect his bank account. In fact, he feels giving in could be counterproductive to his happiness.
