This is the first-ever investment made by Warren Buffett in Google since the company was founded in 1998. Analysts say this move is due to leadership transition and Alphabet's strong financial profile.
In one of the most surprising moves of billionaire investor Warren Buffett's later career, Berkshire Hathaway revealed a new $5.06 billion position in Alphabet Inc. in its latest 13F filing released after the market close on Friday. According to Berkshire's latest 13F filing, as of September 30, the company held roughly $4.3 billion in Alphabet stock, making it Berkshire's tenth-largest equity position.
Berkshire Hathaway has bought a $4.3 billion stake in Google's parent company Alphabet, pushing Alphabet's shares up nearly 7% to $293.40 in after-hours trading. This is Berkshire Hathaway's first-ever investment in Google since the company was founded in 1998. The move surprised investors, especially because Warren Buffett has long described Apple — Berkshire's biggest holding — as a consumer products company rather than a tech play, reports TOI.
Berkshire's latest 13F filing revealed that the firm has cut its Apple stake by nearly 15%, or $10.6 billion, reducing it to about 238 million shares. Even after the cut, Apple remains Berkshire's biggest holding.

Why Warren Buffett invested in Google after 27 long years
Berkshire Hathaway has bought shares in Alphabet, the parent company of Google, marking the first time the firm has invested in the tech giant since its founding in 1998. Analysts say the move reflects a shift in how Berkshire approaches technology investments as new leaders take on a larger role.According to a Reuters report, the Alphabet stake was likely selected by Todd Combs or Ted Weschler, the two investment managers who increasingly shape Berkshire's $300 billion stock portfolio. Both Combs and Weschler have previously pushed Berkshire toward tech investments, for instance its Amazon purchase in 2019.
The size of the investment suggests it had Warren Buffett's approval, even as he prepares to step down as CEO at the end of the year. A CNBC report quoted Bill Stone, chief investment officer at Glenview Trust Company, saying, “The Alphabet purchase may signal that Berkshire is broadening its comfort zone in technology as leadership moves to the next generation.”

Analysts also point to Alphabet's financial strength as a key factor. “We think Berkshire likely finds more comfort investing in GOOG over other tech plays given the high free cash flow potential of its core business coupled with an attractive valuation at about 22x 2027 EPS amid a healthy top-line growth trajectory,” said Angelo Zino, an Alphabet analyst at CFRA, as quoted by CNBC.
Experts say the combination of leadership transition, growing familiarity with the tech sector, and Alphabet's strong cash generation and valuation explains why Berkshire bought Google shares for the first time in 27 years.
What Warren Buffett said in his last letter
Warren Buffett, in his annual message as CEO of Berkshire Hathaway to shareholders – a tradition dating back to 1965 – said that he will be “going quiet” after he steps down at the end of this year. Starting in 2026, Greg Abel will write Berkshire Hathaway's annual shareholder letter and take questions at the company's annual meeting. Warren Buffett said he plans to join the directors on the arena floor rather than lead the event. Buffett told investors he will “continue talking to you and my children about Berkshire via my annual Thanksgiving message.”
This year's shareholder letter was notable for its length, running more than seven pages—double the size of the 2024 letter. It covered familiar Buffett themes, including aging, luck, long relationships in Omaha, and praise for Berkshire's shareholders and executives. Buffett also expressed clear confidence in Abel's ability to run the company. He shared a childhood memory of fingerprinting nuns while hospitalized, saying it was done because “someday a nun would go bad.”
