Want Your Gas Cylinder To Last Longer? 10 Simple Kitchen Habits Can ‘Reduce Consumption By Nearly 50%’
The LPG shortage has started affecting several Indian cities as the ongoing conflict in the Middle East disrupts global supply chains. LPG cylinder prices have also seen a rise in many places after tensions escalated following US-Israel strikes on Iran. As households and businesses deal with these challenges, people are looking for ways to reduce daily gas use.
In this context, Bengaluru-based nutritionist and wellbeing coach Dr Nandita Iyer shared a list of practical kitchen tips that can help save LPG.
Nutritionist Shares Simple Kitchen Tips
Dr Nandita Iyer shared a post on X where she listed “10 tips to reduce your LPG consumption by nearly 50 per cent." The suggestions focus on everyday kitchen practices that many people can easily follow.
She began with the use of pressure cookers, which she says can greatly reduce cooking time. According to her post, she explained that pressure cooking can reduce cooking time by 30–70 per cent, especially for foods like dals, beans, potatoes and meat.
Another important tip she mentioned is soaking ingredients before cooking. She recommends soaking pulses, beans and rice before cooking, as this step can reduce cooking time significantly. For example, rajma and chana should be soaked for 8–10 hours, dals for 30–60 minutes, and rice for about 20–30 minutes. According to her, soaked foods cook 30–50 per cent faster, which helps save LPG.
Small Cooking Changes Can Save Fuel
The post also explains how choosing the correct burner size can help reduce gas usage. She explains that the small burner should be used for tasks like making tea, tadka or reheating food, while the large burner is better for pressure cooking or boiling water. Using a large burner for small vessels can waste gas, and the flame should not extend beyond the base of the pan.
She also suggests cooking with lids on whenever possible. Covering the pot helps retain heat, reduces evaporation and speeds up cooking, which can lower fuel consumption by 20–25 per cent.
Dr Iyer also advises cutting vegetables into smaller pieces. Smaller pieces have more surface area and heat penetrates them faster, which means they cook quicker. For example, diced potatoes cook faster than large chunks.
Cooking Multiple Items Together Also Helps
Another method she recommends is cooking more than one dish at the same time using a pressure cooker. She explains that dal can be placed at the bottom, rice above it and vegetables in a small bowl on top. This allows several items to cook at once on a single flame, which can significantly reduce LPG usage.
Dr Iyer also highlights the importance of cleaning gas burners regularly. Blocked burner holes can lead to inefficient combustion. Cleaning them every few weeks helps maintain a blue flame, which ensures faster heating and lower gas consumption. Yellow flames usually indicate incomplete combustion.
One of her favourite tips is to switch off the flame a few minutes early and use residual heat. Many foods, such as rice, khichdi, pasta, boiled vegetables and dal, continue cooking even after the flame is turned off because the trapped heat finishes the process.
She also recommends using flat-bottomed heavy vessels, as they distribute heat evenly and reduce cooking time. Cookware made of stainless steel with a thick base, triply steel or cast iron works well, while thin vessels tend to waste heat and burn food more easily.
Finally, she suggests smarter cooking habits, such as using an electric kettle to boil water for tea, pasta or blanching vegetables before adding it to a pressure cooker. She also recommends batch cooking foods like rice, dal, beans or potatoes for two or three meals and storing the extra portions in the refrigerator.
At the end of the post, she wrote, “In most Indian kitchens, combining just 3 habits (pressure cooker + soaking ingredients + closed lid cooking can save nearly 30 per cent fuel. These tips are not just useful for the current times, but also to be more careful with LPG usage in our kitchen, reducing wastage and costs both."
