The escalating fuel disruption stemming from the West Asia conflict has officially breached the national capital’s piped gas network, forcing Indraprastha Gas Limited to implement a sharp 20% reduction in supply for all commercial and industrial tenants effective March 11, told TOI. This supply squeeze, mandated by government notifications to protect domestic consumers, has already crippled the capital’s hospitality sector, with over a dozen restaurants in areas like Paharganj and Vasant Kunj suspending operations on Wednesday. As piped gas pressure drops and commercial LPG cylinders become unavailable even at premium grey-market rates, industry leaders are warning that the city’s dining infrastructure faces a total paralysis by the coming weekend.
The reliance on Piped Natural Gas (PNG) as a stable alternative to cylinders has failed to shield Delhi’s hospitality giants from the current global energy shock. Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) has issued a formal advisory restricting all commercial and industrial customers to just 80% of their average six-month consumption.
According to a communication issued by Ambience Mall in Vasant Kunj, citing the IGL advisory, these restrictions came into effect at 6:00 AM on Wednesday, March 11. Amit Bagga, co-founder of Daryaganj Hospitality, told TOI that since PNG had previously kept Delhi in a better position than other cities, this new 20% cut is expected to force a “major number of restaurants” to shut down permanently or until the crisis abates.
The impact of the gas scarcity is being felt most acutely in high-traffic dining hubs like Paharganj. Meher Tandon, owner of Kashmir Chur Chur Naan, told TOI that his establishment was forced to shut shop after their existing stock was exhausted on Wednesday. Tandon explained that his restaurant, which typically utilizes three to four cylinders a day, had been struggling to survive on just one per day before the supply hit zero. The crisis has extended even to institutional kitchens; the lawyers’ canteen at the Delhi High Court was forced to briefly discontinue its main course menu on Wednesday morning due to the unavailability of cooking gas, according to reports provided to TOI.
As the commercial LPG and PNG pool shrinks, restaurant owners are scrambling for alternative cooking methods. Anurag Katriar, founder of Indigo Hospitality, told TOI that several owners are now looking at “moving to induction-based cooking” to maintain continuity, though this transition could take several days.
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Zorawar Kalra, vice-president of NRAI, told TOI that many establishments have already moved to truncated menus. Kalra warned that with supplies “dwindling and depleting rapidly,” a significant portion of the five lakh restaurants represented by the association could be completely out of fuel by the weekend.
In response to the IGL advisory, major commercial real estate managers have begun issuing emergency protocols to their kitchen tenants. Ambience Mall advised its outlets to keep “electrical cooking appliances as a backup” to ensure they can remain operational during temporary PNG interruptions. This shift toward electricity comes as the NRAI officially urges the government to recognize the restaurant industry as an essential service to ensure priority access to commercial LPG cylinders and cloud kitchen fuel supplies before the supply chain completely collapses.
