A South African woman, known as 'Cupcake Girl', shared an emotional video after the Proteas' T20 World Cup semi-final defeat. She questioned the team's inability to win high-pressure matches despite possessing world-class talent. The woman appealed to coach Shukri Conrad to consider mental therapy for the players.
A South African woman who went viral after the “Cupcake ad” has posted an emotional video after South Africa was defeated by New Zealand in the T20 World Cup semi final in Kolkata. With tears in her eyes and a blunt message for the , she said perhaps the South African players need mental training as the team fail to win high-pressure matches. In a two-minute emotional video, questioning why the team continues to fall short in big matches despite having “world-class players.”
The clip, shared widely online, shows her in a yellow South Africa jersey speaking directly to the camera.
‘Year after year, why can we not get over the line?’
Thanja questions why South Africa, often praised for its depth and talent, struggles at crucial moments. “The calibre of talent in South Africa is insane. We have world-class players. We have everything we need to win these games. But we don’t.”
Her words echo a familiar sentiment among Proteas supporters who have seen their side dominate bilateral series, only to stumble in knockout matches.
A direct appeal to coach Shukri Conrad
In the middle of her message, Thanja turns her appeal toward South Africa head coach .“I’m asking — please, Shukri, take a different path. Please,” she says.
She urges the team management to plan mental therapy for the team. “I don't know if it's in your budget and don't know if people still think as a taboo. But in sports it is very very useful and it can change your life,” she stressed.
Though she does not specify what changes she wants, her words suggest a call for fresh thinking and perhaps outside support to help the team overcome what she describes as “demons that clearly exist in the realm that is the Proteas.”
From Cupcake ad fame to cricket heartbreak
Thanja Vuur first became popular online after appearing in a cupcake advertisement that earned her the nickname “Cupcake Girl.” Her cheerful personality in that clip made her a familiar face on social media.She shared a personal note about fear and chasing dreams and taking help of mental therapy when she was unemployed.
Despite her visible pain, Thanja ended her message with loyalty.
“Of course I’m hurt. But I’ll always be… South Africa forever,” she said, before wishing luck to India and England ahead of the final. “May the best team win.”
