Video Of ‘Wheelchair Misuse’ By Indians At Dallas Airport Has Immigrants Saying ‘I Wish I Could Defend This, But...’

Biocon founder Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw recently sparked a heated conversation after pointing out that some healthy Indian travellers are misusing wheelchair services at airports. She reacted to a clip from a US airport and suggested that charging a small fee can help identify passengers who actually need assistance. Now, a new video from Dallas airport has added more fuel to the discussion.

The video shows a group of Indian passengers using all the available wheelchairs, leaving no support for people who may actually require help. The person who posted the video wrote that such misuse not only creates inconvenience but also raises worries about how these habits might affect others.

Dallas Airport Video Shows Indians Taking All Wheelchairs

The video posted on X (Formerly Twitter) came with the caption, “Another video of Indians taking all the wheelchairs at airports and leaving the disabled without needed assistance. If they are doing this at airports, do you think our elderly are being scammed by them in our healthcare system too?"

Reacting to the video, a social media user said, “I'm an immigrant, I wish I could defend this, but I can't."

Another individual seeing similar issues at the airport wrote, “I get so disgusted watching some of these people use a wheelchair to get to the flight, and then, while on the flight, they walk so normally. Much to my shock, during my last trip, I saw a couple walking out casually at Chennai Airport. Something needs to be done about this. Maybe extend this only to those over age 70, and with a valid certificate, along with additional costs."

Absolutely. I get so disgusted watching some of these people use a wheelchair to get to the flight, and then, while on the flight, they walk so normally. DGCA Updates Rules To Allow Paid Wheelchairs For Healthy Passengers

Swipe Left For Next Video

Earlier this year, after receiving many complaints about people misusing airport wheelchairs, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) changed its rules. They now allow airlines to charge a fee if a healthy passenger or a fit senior citizen wants to book a wheelchair, even though they do not actually need one.

At the same time, the DGCA made it clear that airlines must continue to give wheelchair support free of cost to passengers who genuinely need assistance because of age, health or disability. They further reminded passengers that if they book a wheelchair in advance, they must reach the airport early. Since every airport is different in size, layout and security steps, airlines can set their own minimum reporting time to make sure passengers get proper help without any delays.
