Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw Says IndiGo’s Business Class ‘Gourmet’ Menu Is ‘Uninviting And Tasteless’, Airline Responds

Biocon Chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw expressed her disappointment over the in-flight meals on an IndiGo flight. Recently, she shared her thoughts on the “gourmet" menu offered to business class passengers by the airline and posted a picture of the items she received on X (formerly Twitter).

The meals in question were provided through Oberoi Flight Services, part of The Oberoi Group, with which IndiGo collaborates for its business class and premium cabins.

The Menu That Raised Eyebrows

The menu Kiran received included dishes like “German lentil and feta salad with beetroot aalouti," “Lavash with cream cheese yoghurt deep," “Thandai tres leches cake" and “Mixed nuts pink salt and pepper."

Each dish had its calorie count listed along with a short description and allergen information. The menu also listed the drinks available on board.

Kiran's Take On ‘Gourmet' Menu

Calling the dishes “tasteless" and “uninviting," she shared her views on X: “This what IndiGo calls gourmet cuisine for the Stretch passengers! I prefer their regular items! Oberoi should introspect on this uninviting and tasteless menu – please do a customer survey and I bet you there will be a 100 per cent."

The Online Verdict Is In

Kiran's tweet drew a mix of responses. Some users agreed with Kiran as they pointed out that the menu names sounded creative but the dishes did not match expectations.

One user commented, “Haha, I feel you! The ‘gourmet' label often raises expectations, but sometimes the reality on board falls short. A good lounge meal before departure really sets the bar high, and yes, domestic in-flight menus often struggle to compete. Maybe airlines should run proper customer surveys before calling it gourmet."

Another said, “Looks more like a ‘word' salad than an actual vegetable salad. Showing creativity in the menu and not in creating the dishes. The joke is on us."

“Agreed. The food has really gone downhill. Feels like sterilised food served in an ICU," somone criticised.

“They are trying to mix Indian galouti strong spice flavour with western bland stuff. Does not work at all. Have given feedback," a person pointed out.

At the same time, some defended the menu with an individual writing, “To be fair this was quite tasty when I had it. It was light and healthy as well, and I didn't feel like I had filled my stomach with lead, which is basically what you're eating with instant food. If Oberoi is introspecting, I urge them to continue prioritizing healthy food."

“Disagree. Regular items are high salt and high preservative (hot) and other items are cold and tasteless. I am intrigued to try the thandai tres leches," read another comment.

IndiGo Responds

IndiGo replied to Kiran's feedback, stating: “Dear Ma'am, thank you for taking a moment to speak with us. We're delighted to know that you enjoyed the overall Stretch experience. We truly appreciate your thoughts on our menu, feedback like yours helps us evolve. At IndiGo, we remain committed to offering the best possible experience to our valued customers."

The airline further mentioned that it will work closely with their partner to “refine" the menu.
