UP may become home to Teema’s technology park

The Uttar Pradesh Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (Yeida) is among the frontrunners in a race for a large-scale technology park in India being proposed by the Taiwan Electrical & Electronic Manufacturers' Association (Teema), people aware of the development told ET.
Taiwanese contract manufacturing giant Foxconn's chairman Young Liu is current chairman of Teema and is spearheading the initiative that aims to establish such hubs in the US, India, Mexico and Poland in the first phase. The association is said to be in talks with several other Indian states as well.
“The tech park may come up in the Yeida region, close to Foxconn's upcoming OSAT (outsourced semiconductor assembly and test) facility,” one of the persons said. “The Teema plan layout has been designed to be constructed right next to a Foxconn campus. The strategy is simple — to create advanced smart manufacturing hubs in strategic locations worldwide, exporting Taiwan's successful technology park experience.”
The Teema project, which envisages an Al-integrated, ESG-focused global manufacturing network, is led by V Lee, the former India head of Foxconn, said the people cited. The aim is to enhance the competitiveness of Taiwanese companies and accelerate the global expansion of the island's electronics supply chain. Apart from Foxconn, Taiwanese engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) company CTCI is collaborating on the project.
Teema, Foxconn and CTCI didn't respond to queries.
“As nations strive for economic growth, the development of Teema Technology Parks become crucial to help Taiwanese companies expand globally and manage supply chain challenges and geopolitical risks,” said one of the persons. “The entire initiative aims to combine Foxconn's experience in high-tech manufacturing and supply chain integration with CTCI's strength in large-scale engineering turnkey projects and project management to create internationally competitive and sustainable industrial clusters overseas.”
Foxconn and Teema announced the strategic initiative to establish a global network of technology parks in the US, India, Mexico and Poland on November 21. They said that with the global supply chain getting restructured, countries are emphasising local manufacturing capabilities, prompting Taiwanese companies to accelerate the search for overseas factories and transshipment hubs to maintain export flexibility and competitive advantage.
The plan will boost industrial internationalisation, assisting small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to enter the international supply chain through the expansion and technological capabilities of large enterprises, they said. This involves encouraging large Taiwanese companies to lead smaller ones in creating supply chains abroad, thereby reducing trade barriers and fostering global expansion.
At the time, Teema said it was also collecting information on key markets in North America, Europe and Asia, developing overseas market expansion strategies for each of the four countries named. It added that the first phase will establish supply chain integration platforms in the four countries, with the first park planned for Sonora in Mexico.
In April, ET reported that Foxconn was considering about 300 acres along the Yamuna Expressway at Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh as a site for its first facility in north India. This is in the same area where HCL-Foxconn has acquired land for an outsourced OSAT facility.
However, with US President Donald Trump's tariffs kicking in soon after, these plans were put on ice. Their current status is unclear but Teema could be looking at the region owing to its proximity to the upcoming Jewar airport. It could allow Taiwanese companies to establish themselves in a new geography as they have set up their plants largely in south India.
