A government-sponsored mass wedding ceremony in Uttar Pradesh's Hamirpur turned into utter chaos after a large crowd rushed to grab snacks. What was meant to celebrate the marriage of around 383 underprivileged couples turned into a stampede-like situation, with many even suffering injuries in the rush to snatch packets of chips from each other.
The mass wedding ceremony, organised under the Chief Minister's Mass Marriage Scheme, was held at the sports ground of Brahmanand Mahavidyalaya in Rath town on Tuesday, November 25. The situation spiralled out of control after the wedding rituals of all the couples were completed. As snacks were served, people present at the ceremony sprinted towards the counters.
People Fell Over One Another
In a video going viral on social media, people were seen snatching packets and pushing through the crowd. Men, women, children, and even the elderly were seen snatching multiple packets of chips. At one point, this reportedly led to a stampede-like situation, with people falling over one another as they attempted to grab as much food as possible.
A Child Even Suffered Burns
According to a report by Free Press Journal, a groom was also captured running away with a packet of chips. Amid the chaos, a child even suffered burns after hot tea fell over his hand. Eyewitnesses claim that there were no officials present at the time to control the crowd or manage the distribution.
