'Just A Joke’: Twinkle Khanna Clarifies Viral ‘Raat Gayi Baat Gayi’ Comment That Sparked Cheating Row
Twinkle Khanna has finally reacted to the buzz around her viral “raat gayi baat gayi" line from her talk show Two Much, after the clip sparked debates about infidelity, marriage and Bollywood couples. The comment — made during a casual chat with Kajol, Karan Johar and Janhvi Kapoor — quickly snowballed on social media, with many questioning whether she was downplaying cheating. Twinkle has now clarified that the moment was taken far more seriously online than it was on the show.
‘It was not a serious discussion'
In a conversation with The Times of India, Twinkle addressed the accusation that she was “making light of infidelity." She clarified that the line came from a fun segment on the show, not from any moral stance. She said it was “part of a lighthearted game" and “not meant as a serious debate." Twinkle added that if the panel had actually been discussing monogamy, her tone would have been very different. In that case, she would have spoken about how monogamy developed historically — “when we moved from a nomadic lifestyle to farming" — and how society shaped these expectations. But within the show's context, she said, the remark was “just a joke".
Why she was comfortable working with Kajol
Twinkle also reflected on her dynamic with Kajol on the show. While the two had known each other earlier, she said their on-screen comfort came from being quite similar in how they communicate.
“She is also someone who doesn't play games, what you see is what you get," Twinkle said. She shared that she didn't have to overthink anything during filming because both of them prefer being straightforward. Twinkle added that at this stage in her life, she wants work that challenges her, and the show pushed her out of her comfort zone.
How the clip turned into a controversy
The storm began when Twinkle asked Janhvi Kapoor and Karan Johar whether emotional infidelity is worse than physical infidelity. Karan, Kajol and Twinkle agreed that physical infidelity may not always be a deal breaker, leaving Janhvi visibly surprised. Twinkle then joked, “We're in our 50s, she's in her 20s, and she will get into this circle soon. She hasn't seen the things we have seen. Raat gayi baat gayi."
